RTE have decided to give us another homegrown comedy program. Its primary setting of all places - is an Irish hospital.

Do you think it was right for RTE having commisioned this program at the time
when thousands of Irish people have to suffer 3rd world conditions in our healthcare system ? I mean fair enough if it was a documentary type program but a comedy ? our healthcare system might be a laughing stock but certainly not a laughing matter.

Don't be so touchy. Scrubs and MASH are two great examples of shows that actually serve to highlight the shortcomings of medicene thru humour rather than just having a laugh at sick peoples expencse.

Besides if there's anything in this country that needs to be torn apart thru comedy it's out healthcare system.

Considering the amount of medical comedy and drama shows that come from the US where they have no public healthcare I can't see why you would consider this to be a big deal other than the high probability that like most RTE comedy shows it will prove to be rubbish.

You know I think a more apt question is: "RTE are going to commission another homegrown comedy programme - is this right?"

Do you think it was right for RTE having commisioned this program at the time
when thousands of Irish people have suffered "Upwardly Mobile" and others ? I mean fair enough if it was a documentary type program but a comedy ? Their ability to make decent comedy might be a laughing stock but certainly not a laughing matter....

    Are you serious?!!

IT'S A COMEDY... damn right they should laugh at the Irish healthcare system cos it's a f*ckin disaster! They've been laughing about the US Healthcare System for years in "Scrubs"

We have enough documentaries about our healthcare system which shows it's status is ever declining..

PS - Oh and Christ... the absolutely shi*e "Green Wing" ripped off the fantastic "Scrubs".. and now RTE is giving it a go. I'm sure it'll be hilarious stuff!

Did you actually watch Green Wing? It was nothing like Scrubs. I hardly think you could say it was a rip off.

    Wah,wah,wah!

In that case, seem as the NHS was a rambling mess in the 1980's, ITV should never have produced Surgical Spirit or Only When I Laugh.

Really, you need to check your priorities. It's a TV program, not life..

I actually quite liked Green Wing, and it was *nothing* like Scrubs imho.
No doubt this program will be a heap of shyte though.

I think the real scandal here is that in typical RTÉ fashion, they see something successful (in this case Scrubs), think to themslves "Yeah that'll work plus we can pawn if off as homegrown"" and proceed to carbon copy it more or less and spit out the result.
I'm not a big fan of Scrubs, but I doubt this will hold a candle to it...

    Some originality please?

How do you know its like Scrubs? At least wait until it airs before you start to attack it.

Not to be confused with an educated one though.

Care to tell me what are the three funniest programs made by rte?

    But...........

    To make it inserting.

You can't include, Bachelor's Walk, Paths to Freedom, or anything with Dermot Morgan. The first two aren't allowed because they were comedy slash drama, and not sitcoms. And Dermot is disallowed because the bastards didn't run with Fr Ted, cancelled his topical quiz show before it aired, and lifted Scrap Saturday because Rambo Burke glared at them. Oh and no "Blizzard of Od" which I'll admit is very funny, because it rips the piss out of the rest of RTE's output, so doesn't count.

And no unintentially funny programs, Pat Kenny can illicit the occasional morbid laugh.

Cause seriously the words "sit-com", "rte", and "funny" have never been used in a sentence unless the words "about" and "as" and "my grandmother's funeral".

This list of RTE recent sit com's is not so much a TV schedule but a list of crimes aganist humanity, The Cassidys, X-tra X-tra. Upwardly Mobile, Leave it to Mrs O'Brien........shudder.

Oh and sod Killnascully, cause it took them about thirty years to work out a plan to rip off last of the summer's wine, and stew is just a hogde podge of sketches ripped from the International's comedy club.

So yes it's an educated guess, considering the quality and form of RTE's previous ventures in this arena, I would be very very surprised if we weren't served up a pile of tedious, flacid, unfunny dross, and thats if we're lucky.

Fr. Ted was not pitched to RTÉ. If you had seen the Dermot Morgan sketch show from the 1980's you can see why RTÉ didn't run with his quiz show. The writers of Fr. Ted where well known in Britian for years before Fr. Ted happened.

    The Panel
    DFTG
    Naked Camera
    The End
    Apres Match
    Zig And Zag
Rodge And Podge not many but then RTE doesn't make that many shows.

I liked "Love is the Drug" but will discount it as it is a Comedy/Drama.
ITV should never have produced Surgical Spirit

Another TV company that should stay clear of producing any Comedy.
plan to rip off last of the summer's wine

Wouldn't have thought that but there you go.

I hope that it is not a sit-com as they don't do them well, but the I think the sit-com is dieing a slow death.

Green Wing is a Mix between Smake the Pony and Scrubs. You will note that the strange things happening in Green Wing are actually happening and not in the heads of the doctors.
