    I switched my pc off last nite as usual and went to bed. Woke up this morning and switched it on, but it dont wanna work :(.
    Before it begins to start windows i get a message

    Windows could not start becasue the following file is missing or corrupt:
    <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
    Pease reinstall a copy of this above file.

    :(, crisis, what to i do. I stuck my XP cd in and went the recovery console but thats just a dos prompt screen, i dont no how to use those :eek: .
    PLEASE can sum1 help, gotta get on this pc this morning.

    I suggest you reinstall WindowsXP onto your comp which should get your comp again and retain all your previous settings.

    Ahhh, thats a mission, but if it has to be done. Would i install it over the old windows or as a second copy? I would think u would have to have it ass a second or it would just overrite all the drivers, programs etc??

    can u get into windows at all?i mean to the desktop and use the run command?

    well, ask someone to get hal.dll from their XP, once its the samer version put it on a floppy disk or cd, then use the recovery console to copy/replace your old one

    Should should be given a repair option as you go through the install screens.

    Your program/drivers settings will be left intact....and the missing files will be replaced.

    Everything should then work once the repair install has completed.

    here, i'll email you my HAL.DLL, then put it on a cd/floppy, boot up into XP with the recovery console.
