Thinking about something like this Rover 25. Any major known problems with this make? Seems like good value for money. I drove one today at a local overpriced garage and was impressed with the ride.

Good source of info on new & second hand cars:

Rover have gone belly up, which is probably why the price looks relatively good.

Mate, it may seem like good value now , but 2/3 years down the line it will be worth half nothing.Rovers are notoriously hard to sell on second hand and now that the company no longer exists it begs the question re the availability/prices of spare parts in the future !!!!

Great engine, but has a reputation for being prone to head gasket failures.
Although the reputation may be deserved it is definitely not as common as many people would have you believe.

There are a few variants of the 1.4 K series engine. I wouldn't want the 8 valve version. There is a restricted 16 valve version which can be "fixed" by swapping for the throttle body on the normal 105PS (103BHP) 1.4 mpi 16v.

Ibanez says he's selling a '96 400 (basically a saloon version of the 200 there)with a 1.6 litre version of the same engine for €400

You won't have to worry about depreciation there! :)

Caterpillar send a circular to all the Rover dealers guaranteeing parts availability for the next 12 years.
