how does your club work?

    I've two major questions.

In your club, do the beginners and intermediates and advanced all train at the same time? Or do you have a beginner class from, for example, 7-8 and an Inter/Adv calss from 8-9?

In the clubs I've trained in, they don't do this. Sometimes there is a junior class on at an earlier time for the children.

I beleive this concept of splitting the class up is common in TKD.

    Second question.

How is your club financed? Do you have a sponsor? Do you receive much from the Goverenment in terms of grants etc. from the Dept, of Sport or from the Lotto etc? Or is it all run from the money the members give you?

The old TKD place I used to go to split it up into seniors and juniors. My BJJ class, theres only a handful of us so we all train together.. We've no sponsor, we just pay the hall costs and insurance costs.

AFAIK, the irish judo association get about 100,000 euro a year from the ioc and similar. The Amateur Boxing get about 500,000. not sure how much ends up in the clubs.

my college club pay our coach 1000 a term.

I pay out most of the costs for my club :(

But I don't mind because I love training and teaching.

If a club is small all members will be trained in one group. But when there are more people of different levels then it's good to split the groups so that they can work on there particular speeds.

Also ages can be a blocker for certain techs, and adults might not feel comfortable standing behind a kid with a higher rank??

It needs to be ballanced though, and mixing the class and bringing them back to separate groups is a good way to keep a happy pace going.

theres only a handful in our club so everythings out of our own pocket. Still, the venue is ideal. The class is divided into beginners and advanced. To a degree its due to the modular nature of the curriculum and the fact that free sparring requires head, hand and elbow padding which takes ppl a while to scrape together . But it sucks that the segeregation happens to such a degree, nobody benefits from it ultimately

been an while since ive been there but heres how it used to run,

tue and thurs would be everyone training together, after the initial warm up the class would be split, i'd teach the beginners for about half an hour or so going over the basic concepts of the style while the other group would be training in advanced kata and knife defence.
the class would then join up and finish up going through combinations.

friday nites were for advanced students only as were the occasional sat and sun sessions that were held.

we never got any funding, we held annual raffles to raise money for mats and punchbags, got em after 3 years

Members train at different times according to belt colour/Kup .

Fees of 20 euro per week for 3 training sessions is paid, sponsored walks and such also help fund the club and events [ like funding the Irish team for the TKD European Championships next week ] .

Training days run Mon to Sat.

    Everyone trains together.
Money comes from college grant/membership+class fees
