Would like any thoughts on this - I know it's probably the most-photographed building in Dublin, but is this shot worth keeping/printing. I quite like the tones and reflection. Taken last Saturday as the sun was pouring down.

    Thanks.

Nice, lovely tones and good contrast.

    Yeah it's quite nice.
Two things i don't like though.

One, there's some kind of smudge at the very top about 1/4 of the way over from the left. It keeps catching my eye and could easily be fixed in photoshop.

Two, you've obviously taken time to set up the shot and frame it etc. but why have you left part of the IFSC buildings in the shot?
It really spoils it for me.

I took some night shots of the Customs House myself a few months back, i might try and dig them out.

Thanks Gnome. Killian - you're right about the smudge, must have been dust on the lens/monitor. I only spotted it after I'd posted.

On the IFSC buildings, well they're there because they're there. What I mean is, I crop in a consistent 6x4 format for printing/framing, and wanted to keep the full reflection in shot. I couldn't do that and lose the outer edges. And I didn't want to crop too tight on the main subject or centre it too presisely either. The idea was to let it 'breathe' a little, and also to place it in context. The Customs House is surrounded by modern office space now. I suppose the alternative would be to clone them out in photoshop, but I don't believe in using photoshop that way, only for cropping or tweaking contrast/saturation. But I take your point. Personally they don't bother me. On another day it might be possible to frame it differently.

I have another one with a new office building I'll post that will definitely intrude on the subject. This time it was very deliberate though.

Would like to see your CH shots.

I just don't think there's enough of the IFSC, or other modern buildings in the shot, to say that you're showing the contrast between old and new.
It's just more of a distraction.
But as i said it's just my opinion and i understand you not wanting to crop the shot anymore, perfectly understandable.
It's a nice shot and they're only minor criticisms.

The second shot you've posted is fantastic.
    I really like it.
I would say that this one shows a much great contrast between old and new.
I've never seen those sculptures before, but i presume they're Famine related?

Thnks Killian, it is a famine memorial, down the quays towards the Point. It has been there a few years, there's about half a dozen figures. It's very striking, but I noticed driving past a while back that the new Ulster Bank complex had changed the view from that angle. Famine to Celtic Tiger in a couple of hundred yards.

    Ah interesting.
I've never had reason to be down that way.
Might take a look some time.
