Sky+ was not introduced into Ireland until much later than the UK. I wonder if the HD launch for Ireland will be at the same time as the UK or will it be much later?

A lot of football fans seem to complain about the quality of football coverage. That could be one of the bigger draws to HDTV. I'm not interested in football myself though.

the picture on SD coverage is good enough for me
if i win the lottery i may upgrade but until then or the price of HDTV equipment comes down, no thanks

I'm not sure, but if you want a HDTV set, you'd want to start looking at a set a little bigger than 32".

What's the point in getting that extra resolution if you are squeezing it into a small box.

I wouldnt put it past $ky to gradually reduce the bandwidth on their SDTV channels so that youse all end up going for HDTV anyway

Having to buy a new box to recieve all this stuff is crap though HDTV has been on the cards for years so there is no reason why the current generation of $ky (and Freeview) couldnt have been designed to be "HD ready"

On the other hand Im not convinced that there is such a high demand for HDTV in Europe. HDTV is worthwhile in the US because NTSC is so crap

Yes 32" is pointless for HDTV unless you sit about 12" from screen. You need at least 48".

The problem with the footie is not the resolution but the MPEG2 compression. At typical bitrate it make pitch look like snooker table felt and can't cope with quick pans or zooms. Action like that needs about twice the bit rate of news.

id say knowing how sky operate they will push the pubs into purchasing these HDTV boxes, because most pubs either have plasma screens or decent projectors, so that when the punter see's how good the quality is the word will go around, i wouldnt be supprised if the sky HD service ads are played more than the crazy frog ads. they will probably do what fox do in the us on there cable services, put a banner on the bottom of the screen when the show is starting saying also available in sky high def widescreen.

id buy the equipment if it was cheaper but i dont have a hd tv
