Playing middle pairs in Mid Position

    hi,
    quick query.
lately i have been losing too many chips playing middle pairs (55's up to 10's) in mid position. What i would usually do is raise and find callers. So my question is with middle pairs should you just call in mid position and hope to see a flop or go all in and make it difficult for AX merchants to call.
    thanks,

it depends on how you want to play them.

if you just call the blinds and get a couple more callers then you are playing for set value. If you hit trips, its paydirt otherwise fold and its a cheap hand.

Your other option is to try and isolate a player and play him heads up. Your mid pair has a much better chance of holding up against just one player.

As you say you are getting too many callers you might think about either raising your raise or just flat calling. I'd lean more towards flat calling myself as the payoffs seem to be much better when the trips are hit. If you make your raise bigger then you may well isolate it to one player but you might also find that you are committing too much to the hand and are in danger of losing way too much.

In tournament play It's a bit of a grey area and lots of people feel very differently about it. If the blinds are low I will limp in MP with any pair 22-88 but raise with 99/TT. If the blinds are higher I'd open raise in MP with 77-TT and fold 22-66 unless there are limpers in front of me, but it really depends on stack sizes and how loose/tight the table is playing and what players are in the blinds at the time.

Cash games you are probably better off with a more bookish approach. On a full handed table open raise in MP with 88-TT and limp with other pairs but again this depends on how the table is playing.

    pretty much what rodge said...

I generally play the calling game... wouldn't raise with anything less than 10s.... unless it was a tight short table...

I agree I think flat calling is your best bet as the payout when you hit a set is much better especially is your opponent has an over pair to the board.

Last night playing in the Mayfair in the space of about 30min I was dealt middle pairs 3 times, each time I hit a set on the flop....it was great set me up for the rest of the tournament.
