The Google Toolbar now includes a spell checker for web forms so you can spellcheck your posts on boards.ie. There's now NO excuse for badly typed posts.

Why not just type your message out in word and copy and paste it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,190 ✭✭✭✭seamus

Oh great, I see the thousand year reich of pedantry has begun.

Oh no my spelling is wrong, now my entire argument is useless.

Firefox plugin's are also available to appease spelling bee extremists.

Is there going to be, like, a SPELLPO now?

Because that would be, like, so cool.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,315 ✭✭✭Chalk

ohh noze, my spell skillz are teh suck.

who cares if spelling is bad?
its communication, not an english test tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,473 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

Not an English test, no. Good netiquette, yes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 691 ✭✭✭Ajnag

Now Im gonna mispel evrything, becouse I refuze to appease the pedants.

Ive done my leaving cert english and as such will not tolerate further examination on the subject. If you have an overwhelming desire to correct peoples english then by all means get a job as an editor, school teacher or lecturer.

    I come here for enjoyment!
Should I wish to scrutinise my functional english I shall seek further tutelage on the subject in a university not on a bulletin board!.

Ah jesus christ i'm about to blow here.I'm a racecar in the red,i'm stressed erics vein on his forehead.
I'm going to come back to this thread in the morning and if you illiterates haven't edited your mish mash of vowels and consonants thrown together in no particular order then i hereby swear that there shall be multiple bannings and multiple bitchslaps administered.
Good Spelling is not just essential its also good manners.
    COP ON.

If I were from the pit of pedantry, I would take all your mistakes, highlight in red and requote your message back to you, However.......

From now on in the spirit of proper english I doth spake shakesperian, Is it now that I am soothing to thy ear or for all that heaven and earth command I am forsaken to a terrible fate of cruel destiny to ever be suspended in your ire?

I wont be installing it on my machine.

Lucky for some that refuse to install it, that the new version of vBulletin (this forum's software) is in beta testing and has a spell checker included.

What's the point in communicating through words if other people can't understand them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,315 ✭✭✭Chalk

    you cant understnd this sentence?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,510 ✭✭✭sprinkles

Seriously I've never had aproblem understanding people's posts due to a small typing error or a mispelled word. The only thing I do hate is txt spk which I'd agree should be banned but this form of policing will result in poeple turning away from after hours. I for one am not going to spell check my posts and if thats a prerequisite (spelling??) for posting in AH then I'll take my comments elsewhere.

We're not talking about minor mistakes, omissions or typos. We all make them. We're talking about 13375p33K, txtspk and those ppl who rite so badly nd incomprheabalythey must be drnk, dislecsic or compleetly of there rcoker.

    Get my drift?

There's not going to be any kind of active policing. No-one's going to get pulled up for their spelling. But if someone decides to post in txtspk or in the completely incomprehensible and brain-hurting way I've outlined above, I'll point them to this thread with a friendly warning.

For the love of god when did people get so darn uptight? If you don't like how someone has worded their post then just ignore it and move onto the next one. As someone else has said, we come here for enjoyment, not to have our posts scrutinised for bad spelling and good grammer!!

I can understand someone who uses txtspeak, but to be fair, if people have dyslexia or simple bad spelling, aren't you being all rather snobbish about it? Unfortunately not everyone is graced with good grammer and a good education. There will be a fair few folk with the above problems or issues, I don't want to offend anyone, who simply come here to be informed, post or have a good laugh and it does seem there are some who are trying to make life just that little bit more difficult for them, or whom are so wound up about something so trivial they can't simply ignore that post and move onto the next.

People's intolerance to those less perfect than themselves is infuriating.
Please feel free to highlight my poor grammer and spelling.

So why not download the google bar? It's not being snobbish, it's offering a solution to those who care enough to seek one out.

ive been looking for this thread.

seemed to dissapear off my cp the other day,
    anyway my point is...

ive been entrering txtspk and 1337 sp34k into word and it doesnt seem to find any alternatives,
so i dont see how a spellchecker is going to help the textually challenged among us.

It will show them how their txtspk post is nothing but a big pile of shïte that nobody would want to read and then smack the across the face and tell them to cope on.

Simple answer to all these problems BINARY.

    1010 01 010101 10101 10011

What cerebral short-circuit led you to the conclusion that someone unwilling to type in complete words is in any way likely to install a spell-checker and sift through their posts to correct the 'spelling' errors?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Soundman

Also... Have any of you thought that perhaps the spell checkers won't actually work for those you are so adamant about segregating? If those amongst us that suffer from dyslexia or perhaps are not the strongest when it comes to spelling anyway due to whatever reason they may have can't spell a certain word correctly to begin with then how are they going to know that the spellchecker has come up with the correct alternative. Those who use Word and suchlike will know what I am talking about. If a word is misspelled in Word and you run the spell checker it generally comes up with a list of alternatives most of which don't correspond to the word you originally were trying to spell.

So what I am trying to say is: Yes give those who use txtspk and l3375p34k an ear-bashing as they are doing that on purpose, but for those who are genuinely spelling things incorrectly through no direct fault of their own then just give them a F***ING break! Is prejudice really necessary in an onlnine forum where people come to chat and just unwind after a day/night in work?
Cop on to yourselves. There is way too much prejudice and "isms" in the real world. We really don't need to see them in an online community too.

Good spelling, like good manners, can't be imposed on people: either you're able to understand how important it is, or you're not. And good spelling, like good manners, is disappearing. Next!!
