Caught the end of an Education debate on the radio in the car today.
Apparently it is unfair stigmatising students with a 'Fail' on their School reports/exam results. Its going to be called 'Deferred Success' from now on!!

    WTF!!

I think you should rename this thread "Political Correctness gone mentally defective"... some mad people might find the original title offensive.

    Intellectually challenged you mean, shirley?

    Mike.

Well it's possible to be very intelligent and still be mad.

And don't call me shirley

    'Deferred Success' sounds better
    like 'Domestic Engineer'

it is stupid, but maybe the little kiddies will be belittled by 'Fail', and proper order. that will teach them to learn

it is equally important for children to know they have failed as well as success...

Having this deferred success term could lead some on in this belief that they could actually be successful in every subject, when the cold reality is that at some point you will have to accept you simply suck at certain subjects.

wtf? what is this world coming too? That is just the final straw for me, i'm becoming a recluse, up to now i throughly believed there was a small amount of common sense to be found in the world at large, now i know it is not so. I'm genuinely pissed about this. It is a truely retarded thing to do for so many reasons! I've lost all faith in mankind.

thats it, i'm gonna have to set up a commune now and just suseed from the world.
anyone who's with me will have to pass:
    a basic humour test
    a common sense test
    an idiot screening test
Long live the Peoples Republic of Sanity

Ha! I see that the state of California education system's "don't hurt any child's feelings" madness will be coming to a school near you. Of course this has already died out in California, did 'teh wave' all over the states and utterly failed, and surprisingly has made it's way to Europe. How fun. But wait, there's more!

The next step into madness will occur when they begin teaching the "whole language" method and primary school children won't know how to spell or read fluently until after the second year of instruction. "We can't correct their spelling, it will make them feel bad!" (Which has gone by the wayside as well.)

    Twits.

Hooked on Phonics will work for you!

I saw an article about the same thing.

"Fail" was good enough for us when we were in school, and good enough for generations that came before us. It did us or them no harm - afterall some of the best inventors and most inspired designers and creators have come out of generations that didnt care that it was called "Fail" and not "Deferred Success".

the term deferred success implies that you've done alright but won't be awarded for it until next year, or that you're actually capable of success but were just a little unlucky this time.

I tells ya, there's nothing better than a big fat fail to kick some sense into lazy students, putting the word success in front of them is just going to encourage the gits. Hippies.

I just saw that advert.. and what I don't understand is the bit where she gets a text message as she's walking along the street and she looks around to see who sent it... I mean... what's that all about?

Oh dear. Thing is, I can't imagine the bulk of the population support this - they're not all "alternatively challenged thinkers" (bonkers)? How about instead of "Fail" you say "Study harder next time, you stupid brat"?

Fianna Déferred Success sounds quite catchy for a political party.

Like I said, I only caught the end of this on the radio FM104?? so didn't know who to attribute the quote to. ie was it the Minister for Education, was it some Education commitee etc.

Well I coincidentely came across this link on an unrelated forum which seems to clear things up Linky . They were obviously just discussing this news report from the UK.

Sure hasn't most Partys slogans been 'we're not there yet but we're getting there' (mainly Fianna Fail) for a good while now .
