Generic Host Process

I am getting the following error when I restart my computer: "Generic Host
Process for Win32 Services encountered a problem and needed to close."

Its a fresh installation of XP - with SP2 installed plus all other hotfixes available. My PC was acting up recently and got itself into a mess so I wiped it clean and started fresh. Firewall is enabled and Norton Anti Virus is up to date.

I have read everything under the sun on google groups to try to get to the bottom of this problem but I'm stumped. There is supposed to be a fix from Microsoft but it doesnt seem to do anything.

All my software / hardware is flashed, updated to the hilt. There is no strange software installed - bog standard XP installation.

anyone else having the same problem - I reckon one of the automatic fixes from Microsoft has caused this so it will probably be fixed at some stage.

Once I clear the message the PC works fine - but I'd like to get rid of it once and for all.

(PS - I know blaster had similar symptoms - but this isn't caused by a virus)

I'm currently experiencing the same problem with my machine. It doesn't seem to be having any bad effects on the computer or anything, as you say, it just seems to be more of an annoyance than anything else. I haven't got around to looking online for a way to fix this but, if I do come across something that works, I'll let you know. Similarly, if you come across something, let me know too, will you? Thanks.

I think you could be right about it being one of the Windows fixes that's doing this. My PC was grand up until a couple of weeks ago when I installed a few Windows hotfixes and this problem has only popped up since then.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? If so, how did you get rid of it if you managed to?

for some reason the error stopped yesterday and hasn't come back. Nothing has changed and no updates have been installed (well something must have changed - but I don't know what it is)

Its a known issue with SP2 there is a hotfix released for it. Don't remember the kb number. Turn on error reporting, send the error and you'll get a link to the hotfix.
