Re-Formatting the C: Drive?

    Hi,

I'm trying to format the hard drive of a Compaq nx9010, and when click 'ok' for the format, I get an error message saying -

"Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or any other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that now window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again."

I've uninstalled pretty much every program, and then formatted, but I still get the message.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Any help/advice is much appreciated.

    bruachain

The problem is you're trying to use a Windows application to remove Windows! Unless you have a RAMDrive, whats going to run the app? Huh?

    D-BAN it instead.

I wont have the install disc until tomorrow evening, so I just wanted to get it formatted tonight.

You could download and burn yourself a copy of SystemRescueCD. It's a bootable CD that has a Partition Magic clone which will do the trick. Always handy to have anyway.

    D-BAN it instead.

Tried using this, but cannot access the A:, and when I try to, the machine gets an error and reboots.

    Any ideas?

if it's got 98 on it, you can format or quickformat it in dos mode.

If you have XP, then boot up from your OS cd and you can format from there. don't know about win 2000, but worth a try anyway

Got it booted up from the OS CD (it's XP by the way) and it was humming away re-installing it when I left for work this morning.

With a bit of luck it will be done when I get home this evening; and then I'll get on to loading up service pack 2!!
