There's a Pride service led by a woman Catholic Priest at 11am on Sun 31st July at the Unitarian Church next to the English Market. People of all denominations/religions and of none welcome. We'll be flying a rainbow flag at the gates.

Is it just a play on words, or is she actually claiming to be a fully ordained catholic priest.

Penny Thoms is a priest of the Old Catholic Church which broke away in the 1850s after the hierarchy in Rome lurched to the right, eg: it invented Papal Infallibility around then(see below)

Her husband Rev. Stephen Johnson is a Unitarian minister, who was Mathew Shephard's Pastor, and rallied the Wyoming community against homophobia after the teenager was tortured to death for being gay.

Penny and Steven live in Kenmare and are regular preachers at Cork Unitarian Church

    Quote:
Pope Pius IX established a rival church of Holland in 1853 giving rise to the name "Old Catholic Church", which distinguished itself from the newly created church by its seniority in Holland. In 1870 Vatican I was convened, and the bishops of the Church of Utrecht were refused seats. Rather than a time of conciliation, the Vatican Council abolished the principle of appeal, opting rather for a policy of "papal infallibility". This led to considerable dissent throughout the Roman Catholic world, particularly in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Many separate communities of "Old Catholic Churches" were formed at this time, seeking to adhere to pre-Roman Christian traditions. Many of their first Bishops were consecrated by the Archbishop of Utrecht after this time, leading to the formation of the Utrecht Union of Churches.
