I don't really get the need for firewalls... Do you guys get many hits/ things blocked on yours ?

I think that NAT blocks as much as you'll ever really need at home. I'm yet to find a decent firewall package which doesnt annoy me by making it hard to allow access on a port by port and protocol by protocol basis...

I used to use zonealarm freebie, then realised it was crap as you couldn't configure individual ports. I trawled through www.cnet.com reading reviews of all the leading contenders and settled on Kerio personal firewall. Its great you can use it in easy mode where it learns for you and doesn't keep asking you questions if you hate setting them up yourself. If you don't understand the need for firewalls then try running some of the security scans available out there and see what can be done to your system without one.... That should change your mind. ;-)

The one thing NAT and windows firewall don't do is to let you know when something nasty phones home. many Third party firewalls do this.

Without NAT on the internet connection or a software firewall you can probably expect a Windows XP PC to get owned within 14-16 minutes depending on which report you believe. (fastest takeover was 30 seconds !)

Yeah I've seen PCs owned in 30 seconds. It's frigging heart breaking. On dial-up too, so good luck getting a removal tool in time.

I think I'll stick to letting norton corporate editon 10 inform me if i have a nasty trying to phone home and keep my system resources for non security uses... I'm yet to see a non-resource hogging firewall.

Bit more OT - anyone know how to get norton corporate to stop doing full disk scans ? I have none scheduled but it insists on doing them every now and again...

I wouldn't trust Windows firewall to be honest. With the news that MS Anti spyware is now allowing certain spyware to run free I certainly wouldn't trust the security of my firewall to a company with all the morals of sewer rat.

It doesn't seem like there are many configuration options in Windows Firewall either, and I like my options.

I use McAfee Personal Firewall Plus because I can have full control over what programs are allowed to access the internet. The hardware firewall in the router takes care of most incoming problems and the software firewall lets me take care of any outgoing problems (like Windows media player sending back info to MS or so on). Plus it warns you if any new program tries to gain access to the internet, which I don't think Windows Firewall does.
