Well, I'm not buying this latest sony incarnation on its release date again, no siree.

2006 I thought, after the dust has settled with the X-box 2.

Not really. PSP is showing every sign of stealing XBox360's Christmas, while the pure power of the playstation brand, not to mention the console itself, should ensure a successful launch for the PS3 as late as next Christmas.

It's not a question of which console reaches the market first, it's the question of which console has the strongest brands associated with it. Just ask Sega that one.

The PSP wont be stealing xbox360's xmas if they dont bring any decent games out, 1 in every 4 new games coming out is supposedly a racing game. 90% of games seems to be ports and not everyone is gonna like that. About 2 games came out in the last 2 or so months in the US and it looks like september is gonna be a month full of ports. I would not recommend anyone I know to buy a psp atm at the price its at. They've just started to market it here it seems, there was an article about in the Irish Independent on the 3rd page the other day saying its the "ipod of the gaming/movie world" and you can download movies! They made it sound like itunes and that u can just buy the latest movies and download them on 2 ur psp.

I own a PSP and I'd recommend anyone remotely into games to get one. It's gotten far more use than my DS(which I bought in December and I got the PSP in Feb/March I think)

I think if it's marketed right it could fend off the 360 to an extent for a short while but they need to get the PS3 out before too long. In general the handheld and home console markets kind of coexist but come christmas kids are gonna either want a PSP or an X-Box 360 so they will be competing directly for that market(I wouldn't recommend a PSP for kids tbh their a bit expensive and I wouldn't want to see one being dropped)

Beyond Christmas though the PS3 needs to be released. I know being first out hasn't been an advantage for Sega, but it was clearly an advantage for PS2 and being out late has hurt Nintendo in recent generations. All other things being equal(which they weren't in Sega's case), then being out earlier is a big advantage. And I think Microsoft are investing enough in X-Box 360 to really get on top if they don't have competition quickly.

Sony has already sold out stock earmarked for September 1st over a month ago via pre-bookings. And that, as you say, is before they've even started their huge hype machine.

Every single figure you've stated is a gross exaggeration, but lets not beat around the bush: Need for Speed Underground 2, Fifa and Grand Theft Auto, may be ports or racing games or both, but they are also exactly what tops the charts. The PSP is launching with games from a huge number of the biggest franchises in games, and, regardless of quality, they're going to sell.

As for the article in the Independant: it's exactly that type of mainstream-press reportage that is going to drive demand - no matter how ill-informed or badly written.

I'm not saying that the PSP is better than the XBox360. But you can't deny that, amongst the general public, there is a much greater level of interest for it. It has the biggest games, the biggest movies and the biggest brand name in the business. That'll count far than the quality of the games.

Also, it's interesting that you criticise the PSP for its price and for its line-up of games - both quality and quantity - when we know practically nothing of these very same things with relation to the XBox 360, which is surely a worrying sign when we're mere months away from launch.

But becease the XBox 360's release is 4 months before the PS3's "I say" it'll get alot more sales and it'll be a bigger hit ( thats why the PS2 was proclaimed better then the XBox last time ).

6 months is nothing, in the mainstream and even to hardcore gamers its not a big wait. Every console I own(apart from my DS/PSP, guess I've more expendable income this generation) was out for a lot longer than that by the time I bought it. The PS2 had a good couple of years on the X-Box, and a huge catalogue of games by comparison, that was the difference.
