Reverse Snobbery

I got into a taxi with my mates and a girl we dont know ( she jumped in because there were very few taxis around ) and we were going home from a pub in Howth in Dublin. I was in the front and two of my mates were with her in the back, and as soon as they said they were from sutton, her reaction was fairly snobby towards us. I think she was from moyclare in baldoyle or someplace like that and she worked in superquinn. she seemed to have this big chip on her shoulder because we lived in a nicer area where people have a bit more money.

anyone else here get that kind of attitude when you tell someone your from a better off area ?

I can see why she would react that way. She assumed that you would be snobbish towards her. I know Moyclare and there has always been that perception about it, rightly or wrongly, within the immediate area. Sutton itself has always had a reputation of snobbery about it. Some people who live in Baldoyle give their addresses as Sutton.

are you both suggesting that i was being snobby ?

Yeah I see that a lot, I really think it says a lot about the person. Though once you talk to them the same way you do everyone else they usually get over it quickly

    "Yrebbons"

Sounds like an attempt to introduce vowels to the Welsh language.

I was a bit of a reverse snob at times towards my friend who has a gutiar worth 10 times as much as mine. Now his Dad took it back, and we can't jam anymore. I feel bad now.

And the twice in two consectutive sentences combo!

Thats a snobbery score multiplier right there! ;)

Nope I don't know you. I am just making an observation. I understand where she is coming from.

I worked in Baldoyle for a year in 1995 and lived in Moyclare. I had no problem with the place at all.

People have pre-conceptions about people from all walks of life; not just pre-conceptions about people from lower socio-economic backgrounds. I've never had anybody be rude to me because of where I'm from but when I was in college people assumed I would be ditzy/ shallow because of where I lived. I'm not ;)

Now... there's nothing wrong with working in Superquinn! I work there part-time and it's probably a lot better than lots of jobs out there!

But on the reverse snobbery thing, I've seen that loads! I'm an arts student in UCD that went to a private school so people regularly assume that I'm one of those d4-type girls. I'm not like that at all. I live in Knocklyon, which while a decent area isnt exactly Ballsbridge if you know what I mean.

I get it from both ends, people who think I'll be a posh b*tch and people who think I'll be some sort of knacker. It totally exists.

Happens to me all the time, I'm from Templeogue and people hear that it's an all right area but once they hear it's beside Tallaght they turn into normal snobs. Btw I'm not saying anything bad about Tallaght, loads of my mates are from there, though I can guarantee that I'm a snob in some walks of life, everyone is.

in fairness i never said there was anything wrong with working in superquinn and living in moyclare. its actually a nice place now but it used to be a rough area about 10 years ago. i used to live down the road from it and i used to work in superquinn too. im not saying at any stage that im better than this girl or that where i live now is better than baldoyle, maybe the houses are worth a few more quid, but when i worked in a petrol station in sutton i used to get it all the time. this girl in the cab started getting all uppity for no apparent reason, only that we mentioned we live in sutton when we were just about to get out .

Reverse snobbery is all around I am surprised you didn't notice. It's one of the reasons it's difficult to get out of bad areas. Human nature tells people to band together with their peers.
If you speak with a D4 accent in Finglas you are as mush a social outcast as somebody with a Finglas accent in D4 . Mind you the Finglas accent is historically very old while the D4 is quite new.
We won't get along it's not in human nature.

i can see her point-the OP's post did come across as being a little snobby, however unintentional it may have been.
Dublin is full of snobs though, with the whole nothside southside rivalry, and people changing their addresses for vanity reasons. Suddenly Ballymun becomes Glasnevin, Tallaght becomes Firhouse (or plain D24 as I've seen in estate agents ads), Ballybrack=Killiney, Sallynoggin=Dalkey, Irishtown=Sandymount, Kilbarrack=Sutton etc........

Is this a joke? If someone held it against me because I was from somewhere more/less affluent than they were, I'd f**king laugh in their face and then walk away thinking "What a silly, shallow little bastard". Jesus... are there really people out there who think like this? Is the whole of Dublin on crack?

well if she was snobb she can go to hell with it
who cares at the end of the day that if ur a millioniare or a nomal person on the road
at the end of the day it all comes to
    manners and education
those who have not got a proper education behave the snobby way
and love those huge brands and wrap them self in those brands coz they know they hold nothing in them self. so they just try to send a signal that we are better .
i would say if she thought that way u shud have said to her "girl u shud b in ur own car if thats ur thinkin" smash materialisim

What dialect/pentameter is that written in?

Snobbery is such an ignorant and fruitless pursuit reserved for the dim.

We all eat, belch,sh*te and fart regardless of address. Grow up snobs - your sh*t really does stink you know.

People in Dublin seem to get very uppish about their areas! Just because I lived in Mulhuddart doesn't make me a knacker - but often the reaction I got from people is "You live in Mulhuddart?!" - with a look that says "You look very clean for someone that rolls in **** all day"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,031 ✭✭✭MorningStar

Half the time people are just joking. Slagging off areas is pretty normal. There are a lot of people from the country side come up to Dublin and they don't understand the jokes or urban life.
Mind you Mulhuddart is really not a pretty place but that means nothing against the people. It's been a while though so maybe they have knocked down those horrible corpo house and got rid of the vermin that live in them :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,618 ✭✭✭Civilian_Target

Yeah - I know, its the other half of the time that I find very strange!

No - Mulhuddart ain't exactly picturesque, and every so often you hear about drivebys happening down the road, but I never had any hastle at all - even when walking home extremely pished in the early hours of the morning. Only ever had any hastle in Dublin on the southside TBH :)

Its totally they way your brought up and the amount of education you have obtained, not just academic but life education, travelling, anthropology, willing to learn from whatever crosses your path. Good working ethics help aswell, its the Fu*ckers that have never worked for anything in their lives that are the most offensive , wheather they be rich and thick or Poor uneducated knackers that never worked a day in their lives and are only out for what they can get for as little work as they can, usually scabbing or robbing, from the normal populate of the government

Due to the pack nature of humans it is difficult to get away from you back ground. Education and up bringing have a lot to do with and most parents actually want what is best for their children. They just don't know what to do or how to get the chance.
I kind of feel the same as you but I don't think that it just as simple as blame them when I had better chances than them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 274 ✭✭shellby

admittedly i'd slag someone for being from a posh area but it would just be a bit of playful banter i wouldn't be doing to insult them but if your a snob towards me i'll be a snob towards you simple as

    Was it a curry-chip?

I'm from that area, I know Moyclare well and lots of people from there.

Plain and simple, yes, it was reverse-snobbery.
