A couple of things I've always wondered

A couple of things I've always wondered:

    1) Is it safe to put a laptop into hibernation (leaving projects open) and then stick in a bag and move it about? i.e. Is anything left running (can't see how but...) or more vunerable to vibration than if turned off fully?

    2) Is there anyway to tell your browser (FF in my case) to auto-include "www." when you type in boards.ie -> manys the time this kind of thing works but manys the time it doesn't find the site. Why is that buy the way? Something to do with the DNS?

    3) Is there any (real) way to tell XP to behave itself and not change folder views around when you leave them...I know you can tell it to look a certain way and the same for all subfolders...but that doesn't seem to stick!

    That is all :D

    Thanks in advance.

The hibernation thing...why are doing that man, its not like your Paris Hilton and need to carry your puppy, or your case laptop, around the place!

The www query. Yip(well kinda). If you hold down ctrl and then click enter it will automatically put in the www and the .com for you when you have text in your browser navigation. But thats .com and you asked about .ie so i suppose i didn't really answer your question properly! I'm not sure if you can get .ie to come up instead of .com.

The windows thing has been wrecking my head for ages. I hate it when you return to the folder and it switches back to the default. Will computers ever learn?

    Thanks for the reply.

I know about the .com thing thanks - works for .net too with other buttons IIRC. But why do some sites work without the www and others not?!

Re: Hibernation...erm I dunno what your on about. It's a laptop...I work at it all day and I don't want to have to turn it off (can take a min or too) if I'm just gonna grab a snack or something - I don't work at an office desk where it's safe. Surely that's reasonable?! I don't have a working battery at the moment so I can't leave it on. Plus in theory at least it's handy to have your programs open etc. when you come back from lunch. Paris Hilton - wtf?! :D

in FF u can bookmark www.boards.ie then u can assign a shortcut name to it, for example "boards". then when u type in boards into the address bar it will bring u to www.boards.ie

in XP, open up any folder, go to Tools --> Options and click the view tab. scroll down and the 6th from the bottom says "Remember each folders view settings". check that and hey presto.

fair enough about the hibernation thing, i was wonderin the possible reasons you would want to keep it hibernated while on the move.

    as for the .com stuff,

Well www, is actually a sub domain.
A lot of sites don't forward the main (eg boards.ie) domain to a location and end up with blank page but most have www.site.com and site.com pointing to same location. I don't know if i'm making sense here :S

all hibernation does is save whats happening to a part of the HDD and shuts down into a sort of deep sleep, where you can take the laptop anywhere, you can even take out the battery, when it starts up its like a quick boot up, thats all, its not harmfull or anything, reasons to keep it hibernated on the move is it takes less time to boot up and it saves your battery, imagine everytime you wanted to check something quick on the laptop, would you like to wait say a minute to boot up and load startup programs and then open up word, outlook etc, or boot up just to show the logon screen like as if you left your laptop on just to get a cup of tea.

I'll do that but I could swear I've done this before, albeit a long time ago. Still I think it 'forgot'. :)
Edit: Yes I already have this ticked. Really frustrating 'cos it changes from list view into details for certain large folders. Ah well.

Thanks for the other replies re: hibernation and www.
I find hibernation a great way to avoid standing round - especially if you turn off the laptop and then remember one last thing!

    Cheers lads.

you can click on your url icon in the navigation bar and drag and drop it onto the firefox interface for quick linking. I have it for a few sites.

I asked my friend why he used firefox and he told me "because you can add quick links..".
I take it most people realise that the exact same feature has been in IE for a very long time under the fairly straightforward title - "Links". It also tends to work..

    Internet Explorer:
    1) Click on Favourites.
    2) Click on links.
    3) Click on the address you want.

    Firefox:
    1) Click on the address you want.

I think firefox wins. Exact same feature, just implemented in a much better way. Of course, firefox still has the "classic" style bookmarks too.

When you hibernate your computer it IS turned off so nothing to worry about there.

heheh I've 130 links on my bookmarks toolbar.

Well, actually, you can get the same effect in IE by dragging the 'links' toolbar into a visible part of the IE toolbar.

But, it's still a pretty moronic reason to evengelise IE over Firefox.

    Indeed it is Sico!

Thanks guys - I've been using the link buttons in the booksmarks toolbar since I got Firefox...I'm practically swamped in them.

The discovery for me was you can right click on a bookmark and from there edit it's keyword - "news" and it'll goto the irish times, etc. Never knew that part.

Firefox allows drag and drop of almost everything (esp. with tab extensions) - bookmarks, tabs, links, saving...

    Cheers again.

For anyone who uses ie ..

as you know typing Ireland into the address and then pressing CTRL + ENTER - completes the URL to http://www.ireland.com .. handy

To change this so that .ie is appended :

Create the QuickComplete key here :

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\QuickComplete

    add the value

    QuickComplete REG_SZ http://www.%s.ie

    Works!

Now what I want to know is how do I

leave the default .com hotkey .. but add my own key combination for .ie??

An adapted version of that won't work for FF will it?

If you use Maxthon you can assign ctrl + whatever key you want to any url.

    Example

    ctrl + # = www.sitename.ie
    ctrl + o = www.sitename.org

Personally I like Maxthon better than FF. It uses Internet Explorers shell, but add much better features and security. It's also faster than FF....
