Modem Problems

I ave been using an internal winmodem and connectiing to Iol free at 48kps, as it is a 56k modem.
As it is a winmodem, however, it is pretty poor for online gaming. I then installed my external 56k modem which I used on my last computer, which also used to connect at 48kps.
However, now when I use my external modem, it only connects to Iol free at 33.6!!
Does anybody have any advise or is there just a temporary problem at IOL?

It's most likely something at your ISP's end. I have similar problems with indigo.Anyway, simple solution is to dial into a different ISP and see what your typicl connect is.If you only connect at 36k or whatever to all ISP's then you know it is a modem problem, if not then it's an IOL issue.

Is this your typical connection speed (if this contact IOL) or the nominal connection speed (if this change modem settings)?

    umm, nominal connection speed?

Basically, iol free has been running at 48kps, which is the most I have ever been able to connect to the net at.When I connect this so-called better modem, it will only connect at 33.6.
The connection seems to be really flying eeven at this speed, so if I could get it running at 48kps, I should be able to get pretty decent ping for online gaming.

Different numbers yield different results in my experience, eg connecting to indigo's 1891 number, its rare that i get 52k (best), usually 33.6, connecting to oceanfree, ntl, unison, utvinternet, i always get 52.3 in win2k. If you are paying per minute, then its well worth while trying out different isp's.

I'm connected to unison. It's charged at local rate, so it's best used after 6 and at weekends (1p a minute) running Win98, I've told it that my 56K modem's max speed is 112kbps, and so for downloading I pull off between 7Kbps & 15Kbps(no bullsh*tting) fo about 20 seconds, and then it settles and maintains about 5.4Kbps, although this depends on who I'm downloading from. It's not my luck of the draw, I've changed modem twice and unison server once, I moved from Dublin server to Kildare server, and still had the same great connection (Jesus, I sound like and ad for unison). Anyway, there's my two cent's helpful as they're not

Thanks for the help guys, I might try out some other ISPs.
My main point of confusion is that it is connecting at 48 with one modem, 33 with another???
    Something always goes wrong.... smile.gif
