    Chaos,

I just thought I should point out to you, that RJ45 is a type of connection and not a type of cable. The cable you wan't is called UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair). If you are using it to connect up a couple of 10/100MB NICs then I recommend you get UTP Cat 5. This cable is capeable of transmission @ 100MBps.

Where to get it in Dublin, you could try Maplins, ask Gerry (Mod of technology board works there). Or else you could do what I did and talk your way in to getting some for free off some Network Engineers.

    Take care,

    ;-phobos-)

    Wood Communications:

I'd recommend you use Cat 5e at this stage, the difference in cost won't be that much.

Cat 5e cable is usually sold in 305m boxes btw.

Be aware that the wiring details are different if you are connecting 2 PCs directly, compared to going through a hub - there was a post here somewhere on it recently.

Also, Peats on Parnell Street - although someone was saying recently that they were getting full of themselves (no offence intended).

Another place you can go is Radionics in Rialto. I think their web address is www.radionics.ie
This place has a much better selection than Maplin and is a hell of a lot cheaper.

    Thx guys
Just want to add to it alittle

I'll be using a Hub and a router in the network... I was also planning on mixing Shielded and UnShieled... I was wondering if this was possible
If not I will have to use Shielded through out the LAN...

I was looking at NETGEAR Hubs in Mablins... anygood?? they only have 10mb ones but i suppose they can get 100mb Netgear ones... Yes and i was looking at the RT311 router by Netgear on their site...

    Just wondering about compatiblity.... smile.gif
    Thx again

A year or so ago, when I was getting into networking and such, I bought a dirt-cheap little hub in Maplin.

    It's a four-port 10mbit Netgear, model en104tp. (small and blue)

It was grand for ages, but when I try to do things like play mp3s for a few hours (all my files are stored on another machine, accessed via samba) the hub will cut out for a few seconds. Any apps I have open across the network will crash, and it's bloody annoying. I gave up on the hub and am using a crossover cable between my box and the server, will have to buy a new hub/switch. I don't like netgear any more.

I suspect there's some kind of overheating or something, but it's only ever slightly warm, mostly from being on top of one of the machines.

    *shrug*

You can use shielded and unshielded cable together. Shielded cable is only needed when your running parallel to electrical cable (for a good distance). Try and get a 10/100 hub if you can. Netgear and 3com are quite good.
Have a look at this too:

    Cool

    thx
Its unfortunite that i need to mix them (price shielded cable) but i got too many power cables all over the place and in the same location where i want to route the cables to the Hub near the Front door....(its going to be tricky...)
I got a week to get it done. Eircom arrive on Friday the 17th... If i don't have it complete i suupose i can just through my Acer NIC into my comp and just run this machine on teh ADSL line...

And yet again... One last call for anyone that knows any good Router/Hub compos that support Multi-Player games while maintaning a reasonably high level of security??
Any help would not taken without great thanks smile.gif

Instant Communications in Phibsboro are also very good (dirt cheap). Don't know if they have a web-site, but their number is in the phone book
