Rail travel within Europe

I am hoping to go away in August to see some of Europe with a group of friends. We plan to fly into Prague, get a train from there to Krakow and from there to Budapest, spending a few days in each city.
What I was wondering is, is it cheaper to buy train tickets in those cities for the two journeys or would we be better off getting a student inter-rail pass for €195. I've tried googling it but its not very helpful. One site did quote from Prague to Warsaw $82
    Warsaw to Budapest $93
    those weren't student prices though.
Any helpful links or advice from someone who's done it before much appreciated.
