Hi, I wonder if anyone out there can help me. My sky system has been acting up over the last few days with the picture freezing up on all channels and then eventually i was getting a message saying that the channel had a tecnical error and to please try again later. I did the usual rebooting but the digibox is now stuck in standby and nothing i do will change it. I've spoken to tech support and did the usual software download but no joy. Is there anything else i can do before i call in the experts. Sky want €108 for an engineer to come out and look at it... not likely if i can get it fixed myself..
    Any help greatly appreciated..

This happens me from time to time aswell, is there any chance your box might be in a confined space and be overheating?

Nope, i'm afraid not, i've tried it in a number of positions but no joy. It's a pace box about 4 years old if that's any help solving the standby issue...
    Thanks..

The powersupply has gone faulty in it or else the tuner. Very common with this make of box you have. it is probably a pace 2500.

with €108 youd be better buying a new box from sky or from another source, id recommend the panasonic TU-DBS31 its very fast aswell and has a good signal at fringe areas.
we have had ours for 3 yrs (now used in multiroom) and had only 2 crashes, alot less compared to our sky+ and the grundig one

You will only get a refurbished box from sky for that €108. New boxes are priced at €179 for the PaceDS 430 N from here

You could ring $ky and say you want to cancel, they will say why, you will say the box is broken and you can't afford a new one, they might say we'll give you another FOC.

Worth a try, let us know how you get on!!!!!

yeah what i meant was if he was going to fork out €108 for a service call, just to tell him what he already knows he would be better buing a new box, since its only an extra €71

I thought the 108 covered a replacement box as well as the service call:

I.e engineer comes out, checks there's nothing stupid wrong, and then will replace the digibox with another one (refurbished).

    Is this not the case?

My last digibox started acting up, rebooting etc a while back. One day it just stayed in standby. Turned out the cat was using it as a toilet

That was the end of that. the board was completely erroded from that nast cat pee :(

Would the smell off the box not have been a clue..... ?
Had a dog puke over my nice new Nad amp a few years ago!
Took it apart and cleaned up the board , but it still stank whenever it warmed up.
Kids and animals wreck more electronic equipment than anything else/

Just a quick update, i did as suggested, rang SKY and told them i wanted to cancel my subscription as i didn't want to pay €108 for an engineers visit. Got transferred over to another guy and lo and behold they are sending out an engineer next week free of charge. When i asked why they didn't offer this last week when i called the spoof was that the technical guy didn't have authorization to do that. Just goes to show that you should bluff these guys out. Hopefully i'll get a more update box and be in business again..
Thanks for the suggestions and advice, much appreciated, keep up the good work..!!
    Bill..
