Morbid Angel

This is definetly a band I've been listening to more of lately. I had Covenant and Domination for a while, but this year I nabbed quite a few of their other albums, namely Blessed Are The Sick, Gateways To Annihilation, and Heretic. I still have to nab Altars Of Madness, Formulas Fatal To The Flesh and Entangled In Chaos.

There's no band that comes near them... The utterly dark chaotic riffs, the gattling gun tempo drumming, Dave Vincent's GODLY vocals! I remember first hearing God Of Emptiness back in the day when it was on Beavis & Butthead, and while back then I hated it, and didn't even know who it was, it still left an impact on me as the most downright HEAVY thing I had ever heard in my life, then years later when I bought my very own copy of Covenant on a whim, listening to it and then hearing God Of Emptiness erupt over my speakers...
    That brought back some memories.

So, what are peoples thoughts of Morbid Angel? Love/Hate? When did you first hear them, and what's your favorite album? Isn't Dave Vincent one of the greatest vocalists in Metal? Answers on a postcard please!

They're feckin great, Covenant is probably my favourite piece of their work and they good people in HMV were kind enough to sell me the greatist "hits", for lack of a better word, for the mere price of fifteen yo-yos.

God knows when I first heard them tbh. 2 or 3 years ago I'd say, missed them in concert.

Actually I'm going to go and have a listen to them now. Thank you.

Aye Morbid Angel are an amazing band alright.I've got Gateways To Annihilation, Alters Of Madness, Covenant. My favourite has to be Gateways, the vocals are just so powerful and blend in well with the music. The other two albums have their moments also (Chapel of ghouls, Blasphemy) and yes of course God Of Emptiness, I'm not a fan of Dave's vocals mroe of fan of Tuckers tbh but dave has his moments.

I didn't really like them when they came out. There was a lot of hype about them being the "new Slayer" and otehr such ****e but I didn't really dig Altars Of Madness at all. Still don't get too much out of it. A mate of mine picked up Blessed Are The Sick and gave me a lend. It took a while but that album really got me. I used to listen to it while I was playing bass in a horrible hard-rock cover band (Hey, I was 17 and thought I'd get the weeeemen) and I'd have that on the walkman as I walked to the guitarists house. I really liked Covenant, the video for Rapture was fantastic. I remember a mate buying Sex & Religion when I bought that and his oul one getting freaked out by God Of Emptiness. There was no way I was turning it off though after listening to that ****e Vai album. Domination is probably their most regular album, if that makes any sense. Hatework, though, is to this day the most evil sounding tune I've ever heard, probably my favourite Morbid Angel song. After Vincent left I picked up Formulas... but it didn't do anything for me, same for Gateways. Heretic is a let down too. I hope Vincent stays cos I think they missed him more than just as a singer.

Great band, but not without David Vincent.

"Woah, was that a bear?" :D

Indeed Doc, Hatework is one awesome song. In fairness though, I do like Gateways and Heretic, they're still good solid albums, even if Steve Tucker is naff and they're not a patch of the previous albums. I'll still pick up Formulas anyway.

Heard them when I was 11, my mates brother was HUGE into them.He gave me a lend of Altars of Madness and Formulas Fatal to the Flesh, I thought it was godly.
To this day I have collected:

    Abominations Of Desolation
    Formulas Fatal To The Flesh
    Altars of Madness
    Blessed are the Sick
    Covenant
    Gateways to Annihalation
    Domination

and havent had much time to get around and buying the rest, but Ive heard Heretic, and only song that is good is Drum Check imo.

Mithras run rings around them and then blow them out of the water though.

There's no doubt that Mithras have certainly created some phenominal music, and Worlds Beyond The Veil is probably better than most of Morbid Angel's work, but with that said, Domination pisses all over Forever Advancing Legions (Which is still great mind you).

Honestly though, I'd rather not get into a one band versus the other debate, because they're both phenominal bands. I will say this though, Worlds Beyond The Veil is quite easily one of the great albums I've heard. Ever.

I am a Morbid Angel fanatic and i don't think i can find a single bad song. I've been following them for the past 13-14 years and i really think that you have to understand Trey's mindset to really understand their work.
Morbid Angel is more than a band, it's an entire ideology to me.
I was hugely let down when David Vincent left, but with Tucker the band took on a whole new direction and became more organic, for wont of a better word. I dont want to compare Formulas to Blessed for example, because that just doesnt make any sense. Morbid Angel is all about progression and each album is a monument, a force unto itself and masterpiece to me (yes, even Heretic slays!).

glad to see Vincent back behind the mic; nothing against Tucker, he did a good job n all, just....he's not Vincent! :P
i love MA. first song i ever heard by them was God of Emptiness, and like Karl said, it left a mark. then i heard Dawn of the Angry and then i ran out n got loads of their stuff! fantastic band, really want to see them live. also, just a small piece of trivia, Trey's real name is George Emmanuelle III.

I don't really want to go into it coz these are my private thoughts which i share with no one. Let's just say that Trey's take on the philosophy of the Self and Will is something i can agree with.

I first heard Morbid Angel around 1993 when they were on MTV's Headbanger's Ball, I think they are pretty good but have yet to buy any of their albums.

Gonzo, you're only 12 years late - better late than never though! ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Covenant, I think, would be the easiest introduction to Morbid Angel don't ye think? Gonzo, get it, get it now :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

I think with Morbid Angel it's similar to Death in that you have to go through their albums one by one, from the beginning.

Gonzo, if you noticed, MA's albums follow the alphabet, and if you're so inclined, you could start with Altars :p - a classic.
