Ahh you just want to get a hardware modem and stay clear of them evil software winmodems (they're ****), and all software modems. The Diamond Supra Pro express is a good 56 modem but it is over $100,
I'm selling my 56k atm since I recently got ISDN. It's a phonic pro 56k v.90 external, i used to get a ping of about 150 on eircom to irish servers

What is now was once only imagined.

There is one good winmodem, the LT Winmodem, which game me 120 pings 5.6k/sec downloads and no trouble. I believe its one of the few software modems that has a linux driver too. Of course mine I sold mine last December...
