Irish times have an article just gone up about it :

    http://www.ireland.com/newspaper/finance/2001/0707/fin15.htm

To sum it up, Esat have applied for co-location facilities in telco exchanges around the 5 major towns in ireland, including dublin, cork and limerick. They will be introducing SDSL (Symmetric DSL) in these towns, and will expand further throught 2002 to more towns throught ireland.

To those that arent familiar with it, SDSL is basically the same as ADSL, except that you get an equal upstream and downstream connection, eg 512k up, 512k down instead of ADSL which usually has 256k up, 512k down.

Now that Esat have finally applied for space in the exchanges, its set the ball rolling so to speak. Only a matter of time before some/most of us are able to get dsl smile.gif (Finally wink.gif )

Good news anyhow, shamelessly ripped from a post on the IrelandOffline forum hosted elsewhere on boards.ie. I realise some of you dont read it regularly, so i decided id repost here...

Symmetry is good. We can start running FTP servers then, should the ports not be blocked....

Well, how much extra would ye guys be willing to pay for Esat's SDSL over Eircom's ADSL?

I know I'd pay about 30IEP extra for the privledge of running a server with decent bandwidth. I somehow suspect that won't be enough though...

Unlike Eircom's ADSL roll out Esat's SDSL is clearly for Businesses or RICH Residential gits...
Words such as SME and Leased-Line lead me to believe that it is totally aimed at SME...
Who here is prepared to pay over £1000 for SDSL over ADSL from Eircom(target market Residential nerds and Nolimits users) Ericom's ADSL will probably only be 1/5 of the price of Esat's SDSL...anyway...I am ringing both companies tommorrow morning...I'll get back to u. smile.gif

    dont forget, its also esat!

they will roll this out and sell it to a ga-jillion customers and wont be able to support it as they do not have a single member of staff which knows one end of a computer from another..

and it will suffer big time at peak time as they dont have enough bandwith smile.gif

    betcha!

    Vagga,

Dont confuse Esat Fusion with Esat Business.

Esat Business have oodles of bandwidth available and yes, SDSL is aimed at businesses or people who want high traffic servers on their premises.

Esat Fusion will probably be the ones releasing ADSL for the average joe's.
Of course your argument about over subscription carries more weight here, but Im still of the opinion "Whoever I can get into my house to install ADSL is who Ill be giving my money to"

Ill worry about oversubscription a cpl of months after that wink.gif

Ive worked with Esat Business in a couple if defferent jobs from a couple of different angles and to me it seems that the people who work there are the ones who are not smart enough to work for Esat fusion smile.gif

I've found the people in Esat Fusion ****y and arrogant.

I've found the people in Esat Business ignorant about the services they sell.

If you can get to a tech in esat bussness the techs are good it's just far to hard to get to them over the phone.
the sales people do not have a clue what they are doing half the time. esat as a company has changed the manment setup (not counting the tech part) far too many times and no one there knows what there ment to be doing and in the long term they know that they will be moved befor any thing they do will make a diff to the company.
I have found when you can get to a tech they can sort out 90% of problems.

Yes, Esat Business was sales, but Esat Fusion was across the board - morons the lot of 'em. Well, everyone I've talked to in there anyway.
