Anyone know where I might get a old-school citroen CX in good nick? What would you pay for one?
I'm also quite interested in the BX's. Especially the earlier ones with the sharp angles on the front bumber.

First good luck! The CX is a car I have long fancied owning, I dunno how much you know about the CX. They start at 2.0ltrs and go up to 2.5 Turbo petrol and diesel. Your best bet at finding a good example is proberly via the Citroen Car Club and chances are it'll be top-end models that are in the best condition. Prices start at "tow-away" and up to prolly 4-5 grand for a normal car ie not concures and not "As driven by French President"

The best place for CXs is on the continent - holland specifically - if you are willing to drive LHD. Citroën André has done them in the past, and I can vouch for the guy - he does tend to deal at the upper end, quality & price wise.

If you must have RHD, have a chat with Frank Greaney in Listowel - 068 23700. He's a Citroën CX specialist and just picked up a spotless series II for peanuts in the UK. Personally, I wouldn't pay much more than €5000 for anything other than a pristine or very special CX. Noel Dolphin in Dublin is a good guy for servicing, and might be able to source you a car too. Definitely worth him inspecting it, if he can spare the time and you can spare the dosh.

I hazard to disagree with Mike about the upper end cars being in the best nick - most of the GTI Turbos and Prestiges that I've seen have all been thrashed, whereas the lower end Athenas and CX2000s have generally been kinder treated. BTW The Turbo 2 with 190bhp is the probably the fastest Citroën ever made, at least until the C6 arrives.

I would advise you research the car fully - join CX-L on Yahoo Groups, check out the Dutch, French and English club sites. Join the UK CCC and get in touch with other owners. Do not buy from a dealer unless he is someone you have dealt with before and/or a Citroën specialist. These cars are very very different from MGBs and austin healeys (thank god), and you can very easily buy a beautiful lemon.

The BX is slowly gaining a sort of underground "cult" status. They were a fine car, particularly in turbo diesel & GTI form for their day, but very very 80s. Compared with other hydropneumatic Citroëns, they were quite harsh too.

Note that you'll have full tax, VRT and insurance on most CXs and all BXs. An early CX will be a sound investment if you buy clever, and a GS is also worth having a look.

Hi Dublinguy - just read of your woes in getting a license, good luck with that. If I was to give any advice it would be lessons lessons lessons.

The only reason I bring it up is that you may/will have difficulty insuring a car older than 15 years if you're under 25, which I think you are. Be worth checking that out before spending ages falling in love with a particular car, only to find out you can't drive it !

Did you notice just how fast they started dissapearing off the roads? These days a moving BX is a pretty rare sight, certainly in this neck of the woods.

Ah, I'm 24 and am planning on treating myself very soon when I'm 25 and manage to get over one or two little hurdles!

My mate used to drive a white BX. We used to call it the Battlestar Gallactica because, well, it kind of looked like it (inside and out)...

Its a very nice car but is that spoiler original - would like to see some shots of the rear of it if possible :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,910 ✭✭✭✭RoundyMooney

Well spotted, I hadn't even noticed that... A "fast and the furious" spoiler would ahem *spoil* those curves big time... Hopefully not...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,501 ✭✭✭Alfasudcrazy

Mmm ... I agree - I have to say its one of the oddest spoilers I have ever seen on any car. That it protrudes beyond the bodywork is bizarre - perhaps even illegal.
Strange that we don't have any shots of the rear of the car - well its not of any relevance anyway - that body colour and interior trim is so oppressively 70's

I've seen later CX's (last models in 80's) with similar type spoilers (.....have a brochure somewhere.....) but they didn't protrude as much as that ?!

    If you type this

    *Classic Cars Internet Temp

into your Google search box it will bring up a PDF document with the classified adds of the Thoroughbred & Classics cars magazine.
In it you will see a red CX for sale for Stg£1,950 - which kinda makes this CX at €9,000 seem a bit steep

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,501 ✭✭✭Alfasudcrazy

Oops - typing in that does not always bring up the same edition - or magazine for that matter but if you type in this

    1981 citroen cx athena

in your google box and then go to page 5 of the search results you will see the *Classic Cars Internet Temp and the red CX will be in there

Well didn't work for me but a bit monkeying around brought me up this PDF link which I presume is the one we want!

    :)

ps Where did you see a price of €9K?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,994 ✭✭✭ambro25

That spoiler does not look kosher, sorry. I've had two CXs, a TD and a Mk1 25 GTI-T.

The TD had a (OEM) small black, rubber-looking 'lip' spoiler on the (rounded) edge of the boot, about a couple of inches wide and about an inch-and-a-half high, and about a half-inch short of the car side.

The GTI-T had a (OEM) very weird looking contraption of a spoiler - looked a bit like a Cossie 'wing' that had shrunk in the wash, kinda-thing. Much bigger affair than the above OEM 'lip' spoiler, with a 'central' portion that made the spoiler kind of an inverted 'W' shape when looking at it from above.

You'll be lucky to source a sound mk1 or even mk2 GTi-T that's not been skimmed a few times. And yes, I did use to eat Porsches and big 5/7-series Beemers or big Mercs on motorways (the demonic thing was on rails at 240 kp/h), but at about 10 miles to the gallon (French traditional measure is litres consumed per 100k/60miles, was averaging 20-ish at those sort of speeds  ).

I reckon it would still command some respect from modern German metal, as by my (undoubtedly "rosie'd") recollection, the thing used to just push-and-push-and-push right to the bottom end of the speedo, with maniacal, turbo-helped acceleration mid-range. I've yet to drive a car with such guts in overtaking situations, and that's after having owned a Delta Integrale

Incidentally, I've also had two BXs, a 1.9D enterprise (hatch body but only two front seats & working doors, back doors were 'welded/soldered' and behind front seat was configured like a -carpeted- flatbed) and a 1.9 TDS (clocked about 220,000 ks in that, from 90ks on clock when I bought it, and it was still ticking like a swiss clock when I sold it).

    Good luck with it :)

EDIT: found a pic of a blue mk1 CX 25 GTi-T (I had it in metallic silver)
    31cx11gtiturbo.jpg

And found this site , post/pm me if you ever need some help re. the lingo ;)

Actually a google search for me brings up links such as the one I posted. I just posted that link rather than saving the PDF anywhere. That said, if you look at a PDF in your browser there should be a "Save File As" option or something in the file menu that lets you save it to your hard drive. :)

    HI there,
depends what you are looking for.
The 22 trs are good I have one but it is lying up and will probably never move.
Wolsley Citroen in UK seem good but do charge.
If you have no idea about them then you have to find the man you trust and get him to find one for you .
The Stainless steel bumpers are the nicest. The Turbo 2 diesel is very fast and trouble free but quite noisy. I have had 2 and loved them. There is a nice cx estate on done deal in the north , but they are huge but driveable and they can do a lot of work.
Buying in france and belgium holland try this as a link.
    http://www.leboncoin.fr/voitures/offres/ile_de_france/occasions/?f=a&th=1&q=citroen+cx+diesel+
I have found teh diesel the most trouble free, great engines etc.
The biggest cost is usually the rusted pipework, which can be a huge cost.
If you know nothing try buy from an expert.
    Best of luck
