Retrieving files from corrupt hard drive?

I recently installed a new hard drive into the family pc, but some of the files copied over had a virus which effected the registery but still the pc was usable.

I have been away for the past week and returned today to find the pc now not able to startup as my father tried to reinstall windows but quit before set-up took place. (the pc was blue screening alot among other things and he thought a clean reinstall would be best (though unsure of how to do))
this would be fine except there are files (photos actually of a recently decased) that really should have been backed up, but kept putting it off and now i'm afraid its too late.

The thing is i can access recovery console and using chkdsk saw that nothing was deleted yet but now i'm wondering is there anything i can do to recover these files?
