Aren't they replacing the trees cut down with different ones? On the completed half of the street there are more trees now than there were before, and they look much better too, they don't take up half the street either.
the spiel on the auction is bullpoop. I'm quite proud that Dublin, while increasingly built-up still has place for trees, and not just on O'Connell St. If that guy took a walk down the main street he'd see the place looking better than before and with more trees.

If you bought it then when someone comes up to you in work looking for something, take it out from under the desk and say "hmmm I dont know..hold on, I'll just check with our oconnell street branch" :D

Oddly Greenpeace don't operate in Ireland.

Chopping down the trees was a good thing. Even more trees will be planted now.

In fairness, now that the planting of new trees on the lower part is done the whole street would have looked pretty bandy if the old trees on the upper end of the street hadn't been removed!
