Anyone done this, I am considering this for my next trip.
Practicalities are okay more worried on the safety issue - will probably be doing it on my own.

    Advice, experience etc welcome.
    TIA.

heya! although i have not done this trip yet, i am hoping to do it for my next trip also....have been reading up on it and there are several books that are well worth a read, particularly Trans-Siberian Handbook by Bryn Thomas and the lonely planet guide on the trans siberian express. like you, i will probably be going it alone so its a good idea to be prepared! what kindof stop - offs are you planning? i hope to spend a good bit of time in mongolia, have always been facinated by the place... good luck planning the trip anyway, it should be amazing :)

Hi, how long would a trip like this last? Where would the main stages be? Are you free to decide how long you want to stay in each place? How much would cost roughly? Which countries would you go through, only Russia and China or is there more? Would the whole trip be by train?

Sorry for the stupid questions but I am interested.

Can't think of any big security issues... a couple of chaps with guns confiscated my film in a Russian train station and there were quite a lot of street urchins in Ulan Bator, one of whom grabbed a half-drunk bottle of soft drink from my companion. Which is more sad than anything else. The city was a poor place then (6 years ago) and I know they have had some bloody hard years since.

Generally, I would just try not to stand out too much from the Russians. But not looking like a tourist is always good advice.

This shows the main options for doing the trip.
The true route is all Russia to Vladivostok but I'd probably got Russia - Mongolia - China.

Stop-offs: no idea as yet, am just getting information at the moment. Seems like a good idea to have a fairly well booked route as much as this pains me. But it will be quite a while before I set off so I have plenty of time.
