Hyperthreading - what apps benefit from it ?

As I understand it, unless your main apps support Hyperthreading then they are more likely to try to fight over the shared part of the CPU with consequent delays than share it when the other process doesn't need it.

Is there a list anywhere of apps that benefit from Hyperthreading or perform worse or are just neutral ?

I was surprised to see 7zip in there....so I tested it.....and lo and behold, it does make use of > 1 processor at once. NICE! :D

I fully expect the next gen of games to be multithreaded, and also the list of threaded apps to mushroom because of multi-core CPU's. We're looking at threading the app I work on to take advantage of SMP's and multi-cores....though I must admit hyperthreading was never a big enough reason to consider threading (which adds a fairly serious coding overhead with it).

    Nice linkage there Axer.

Interesting because I was running 7za in a command prompt and it was only using one "processor" - will try the GUI out.

Interesting indeed. They should both use the same engine. Note that I actually do have 2 CPU's though.....that /may/ make some difference.
