Was just discussing stuff in work and the subject for some unknown reason went onto Peg Guns. A real blast from the past. But only half of us could remember them.

So I was just wondering if anybody else on here can remember them. Brilliant little inventions! :)

    oh, i remmeber them alright.

bit of 2x4 timber, peg , loads of elastics.
    lethal.

the origin of the "its all fun and games till someone loses an eye" phenomenon i suspect

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,625 ✭✭✭✭BaZmO*

Yeah, that'd be them! They were fairly lethal alright.

Myself and my brother used to really injure each other with those peg guns. Extremly dangerous stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 578 ✭✭✭Son_of_Belial

I remember those. I wonder could they be legally classed as a firearm? I know that cross-bows are. Generally the law says that a firearm is anything that comprises a barrel and fires metal or a slug but cross-bows don't have barrels. Either way they hurt like hell when you got shot with one. If you got hit in the eye with one of those it'd be curtains. Literally ;) Check out the Shooting Forum for info

did anyone else make double/treble/quadruple barrel peg guns?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 578 ✭✭✭Son_of_Belial

The peg gun generally consists of a 2x4 peice of wood, a few wooden clothes pegs, some nails/screws and some heavy-duty elastic bands.

On one end of your 2x4 you put a peg and you put a nail through the small hole by the joint. It should be able to open and close but be fastened to the 2x4.

You take the metal spring out of another peg (this is your ammo). With another screwon the face of the 2x4 (if you were holding it length-wise and flat the face is the part of the wood at the far end facing a would-be target.

Well put another screw in here. If you hold the 2x4 flat, this screw is parallel with the ground. Now loop an elastic band over this screw. Hook the metal part from the other cannibalised peg onto the other end and hold it in place with the intact peg fastened at the back. To fire all you have to do is open the back peg.

**Sigh** I was afraid of that...

Why did I never think of double and triple barrel.
    One must be constructed.
As for "does anyone rememeber these". Yes, we do. Check out All things Retro.

Pebble launcher, we used to call them Cherry Poppers. On account of we used cherries in them, SPLAT off a window. Oh yeah.

We used to have big fights with guys from a different road in our estate with peg guns. Some lethal battles and plenty of stinging hits from a peg gun, never made us stop, I think the fad lasted about 2 years, usually only really happened throughout the summer though.
I remember one time one of my mates fired a "warning shot" at one of my other mates, who happened to be running away at the time. Poor guy caught the metal peg spring right on the ear, it was similar to hearing a dog yelp. :D
The mandatory scarper then came into effect.

Check this out. Basically a bunch of guys get bored at work so they constructed a potato gun thingy and launched a sock at a co-worker. The video is here. The first shot was pathetic but the second one was right on the nose. Literally... That's gotta hurt. Imagine getting knocked over by a sock?!

Ah yeah peg guns were great. My little brother didn't like them so much though. heh heh

you cut the top off a bottle, put the finger of a rubber glove around it with elastic, then find as many cherrys as you can for ammo, the fire them and aim for peoples ears

    from the website...
The gun is accurate to within seven metres.

That's some tolerance!!! Although you wouldn't want to be defending yourself with it. But then again you'd be in a serious amount of trouble if you were relying on a rubber band gun to defend yourself. ;)

I remember peg guns alright. Made loads of them and yeah some of them did have 4 "barrels". But peg guns were nothing compared to the Black Widow catapult I had. Now that yoke really was feckin lethal. I'd say you could kill a person with one if you shot them in the side of the head with a ball bearing. Looking back I never should have been allowed have one.

This is so strange!! I was discussing gats and peg guns yesterday with another old codger. We even made one and initiated his daughter into the joys of attempting to seriously harm yourself!!

I have a nice scar from a "mis-fire" on my forehead...

hey i remember these, i never got him withone so i don't know how painful they actually are. the gats, yes i remember them. blackwidow catapults, yep, i remember them too but never got one, i agree, they are lethal (marble firing). someone explain this potato gun to me please, i'm familar with it but it's details have been lost across the sands of time.

Actually, a "gat" was the thing we all used to make out of wireframe clothes hangers. :)

This certainly brings me back to the fun days of loading my pockets with ammo < small stones/ball bearings!! > and do some target practice with some of my mates :D

Btw, yes i have made quad peg guns before, they hurt alot :p

peg guns rocked, anyone remember spud guns? Used to get killed for wrecking the mas spuds!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,384 ✭✭✭pred racer

Yeah, triple barrel all the way, one on the top, one on either side...
best thing was you could use the ammo that was fired at you!
got a hiding next time me mam made jam though, all the elastics from the jam jar covers were gone!

    God that brings back memories!

I also invented the very first "Tracer" peg.
You know those little red stringy strips that you get in black bags? Well I attatched one of those to my most powerfull elastic band, so I always knew where it went, and it was fired from what was definetly the longest peg gun I made. Worked really well too, as I watched it being fired down the road by a friend and all you could see was this long red line. Man, I loved to fire that off everywhere, I used to call it a laser. :D

My friend had one and now he's dead.

Then again you shouldn't drive a motorbike the wrong way up a dual carriageway.

the only way to nail it flat without breaking the peg is to use a Unail, but finding a unail to thread through the peg is more trouble than its worth. plus its hard to misfire if you do it my way

We had and air rifle, a scope and pressurised aerosol cans.

We also made pin bangers and imported suitcases full of fireworks (aged 10).

peg guns are dangerous. I had elastic band gun (little less dangerous). You could load it up with 8 shots. But a friend of mine using the similar layout built one that could fire 20 either as single shots or multiple rounds.
