I am thinking about buying a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 ex dg lens but all the reviews online seem to range from best lens ever to useless so I was just wondering if anyone has ever used this lens would reccomend it or not? If not any alternatives to suggest?

what size do you print your pictures at?
    do you take pictures commercially?
what lenses do you currently use and are you happy with them?

several pro's use the sigma, many more pro's use the canon 24-70 f2.8 L

I bought the sigma 24-70 not so long ago. Great lens. Before I bought it I read alot of reviews from 'owners' claiming it was front focusing badly and all that. I find the zoom ring a little stiff sometimes but that's fairly normal with sigma's.

I think if you can't justify the spend on a canon 24-70L (and lets face it, if you're not selling your images you more than likely cant) the sigma is a good way to go. I've got some very nice images from it. Just watch out for those expensive 82mm filters :(

Oh and you couldn't go wrong with buying it from Keaphoto on ebay.co.uk. A guy there by the name of Albert even went so far as to test the lens for me on a 20D after I expressed concerns about the front focusing. It's convinced me to buy sigma again anyway.

I think theres also a 24-60 or 20-60 new onto the market (last couple of months) that might be worth checking out. If nothing else than for smaller filter sizes.

I have'nt used the sigma lens but I have the canon 24-70 f2.8 excellent lens...I saw a great deal on a second lens canon 28-70 the older version of my lens in the buyandsell a while ago for 380 euro...u may pick one up on ebay.

yeah but you'd get a brand new sigma 24-70 for that money and have some change out of it too... I'd personally rather have a brand new lens than a second hand one, especially when you don't know what kind of treatment it's been put through. €380 is a good price if the lens was in good condition but maybe a little too much to pay for an old second hand bit of kit that could have been used to effectively hammer nails by some careless photojournalist..
