Chorus info/update on Powernet

Thought I would get the ball rolling in this forum by posting a chorus update.

Two months gone and im still thrilled with the chorus/multichannel service. Im in limerick and i can see keeper hill, so i get their 24-hour always on 512k (120kbps download) internet service.

This involves an antenna on the roof (thats why u need line of sight with keeper hill, no trees please) and a cable modem next to your PC with network card.

Costs are 150 to install plus 50 for software/cable tuning from 3rd party supplier. 40£ per month inclusive of VAT with a 12 month contract.

ping info: not stable to irish servers yet (hear they will sort that soon enough) around 100-150

ping to uk servers is very stable at 50 - 70.

now and again you get the old jump in net_graph when playing CS or whatever, maybe due to someone nearby surfing/dl porn/whatever but for the most part when shes running smooth shes running sweet.

there is a 3gb dl limit per month which is the hot topic blocker for most but ill leave that to you, doesnt affect me at all - and ive used it without even thinking about that limit with no problems (installed redhat linux once 500mb in an hour across the net!!!)

to be honest mate, thats nothing new.
Chorus service is only available in Limerick and although its good for surfing and multiplayer games i can woop your ass on downloads.
but good for you (that you can get it).

i dont think line of sight is even enough for wireless.apparently radio waves do not travel in straight lines, they defract. so even if you can see the tower, it may not be enough.

i certainly didnt post it as "something new" but as i have recieved numerous emails on what the service is like...i thought i would humbly do my bit to provide the info in a suitable place...

the fact you can kick my ass in d/l doesnt really provide anyone with any real knowledge other than to stroke your own ego...if you want to be helpful why not offer others info on your ass-kicking connection so we all can be jealous...this is the place to post it no? but please, put your ass-kicking connection in other thread, dont steal mine. wink.gif

Sounds like they don't have proper peering arangements with the INEX. Another company has recently taken over running it and they are doubling the capacity and upgrading to gigabit ethernet, so those issues should be resolved soon (hopefully).

smoking man: SPOT ON..i couldnt remember the word for it...INEX (whatever that is) but thats the story, they are supposed to be getting that sorted shortly.

serial killer: the way i look at it, they won't be monitoring untill theyre customers start abusing/complaining about the service.

but either way, they cant do anything about what channels you get with the digital tv yet either (theyare all free for another couple months) so why would this be any different.

It's the Internet Neutral Exchange: www.inex.ie

It's where all Irish ISPs interconnect so that traffic from Ireland destined for Ireland doesn't leave the country. Some ISPs aren't connected yet and all of their traffic is passing through LINX and back again.

ISDN (This info is intended for those unfamiliar with the technology)

I've had ISDN for over a year now and I've been tempted to change over to chorus. It costs me roughly £50 a month on rental and call changes (same as normal phone rates so it's 20 rental and I use around £30 calls a month). The one thing about ISDN is it's incredibly solid. I live out in the country side and have NEVER EVER had a down line in a year. IOL, etc. allow you to connect at 64k to their servers with their free accounts, downloads are obviously not as fast as the Cable setup however connections to Irish servers give you around 70ms pings. My one concern about Chorus' setup is speed as the services gets taken up more.

    Gigabit ??
    A gigabit connection the D'Internet ???
Have you any idea how much bandwith costs in this country man?
Its somthing like £280,000 a year for an E3 !
    </font>

Not if you're Eircom or Esat, they'd just run fibre straight into the building. It's a peering arangement so the costs are fairly low.

    BTW here's a good site: http://www.hea.net
I see DIT have upgraded from their old ****e 2Mb line to a 10Mb ATM.

Indeed... although unless Eircom/Esat are making a whopping proffit (which I wouldn't be surprised at tongue.gif )
The cost of laying tails is still rather pricey.

Ok, little rant aside tongue.gif, chorus have a share in the global crossing (Actually, I don't think anyone is actually using that yet)
A few STM's to the states and a few more to the UK/mainland Europe.

Mind you aranging peering isn't always that easy.
I've heard that bpn were having feirce trouble getting people to peer with them
in the UK for some reason or other...

    MrTimewalk,
powernet from chorus is not solid at all it stops a few times every hour ,but its only down secs but still it anoying and some times it could be out days .you can get 128k isdn access for the price of 1 call instead of 2 with utv http://www.utvinternet.com/netservices/dialup

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,752 ✭✭✭yankinlk

mr timewalk knows how good powernet is from my own experiences wink.gif whenever i want to meet him for a t2 match it goes down frown.gif

but in fairness, if it goes down for me, its only for a little while, and usually i have been using it for at least 6 hours that same day.

i have yet to be down for days...i would assume that happened a friday evening or saturday morning for you.

Smoking man and moist, you guys seem to be in the know...would it be worth it to get another modem rather then the one they provide? ie: reliabilty and speed wise, im not worried about security (shh...dont tell lee7 h4x0rs)

something like a netopia cable router...

I don't know a whole lot about the cable end of things as I have never actually played with it.

okay okay, u werent on playing CS last night so I recon i better reply if i expect to see u on the net again wink.gif what happened, did they cut off your no limits? wink.gif

my download speeds are 50k by default ftp.
with a tweak, my download speed is 120k ftp.
I have seen 300+k download using http.

my ping to english servers is now around 60
my ping to irish servers has actually IMproved in the last 2 ro 3 weeks and is now under 100 everytime. last night on bayridge cs she was as low as 69.

pricing is simple: 150£ to get harware installed. 50£ to get the software installed, avoid this if you can wink.gif and then 40£inc vat per month.
