This forum is for the discussion of two things.

    1. The internet in Ireland, the politics surrounding it and the way to move things forwards in general. (Esat NL, Eircom LLU etc). Nothing libelous or abusive!

    2. The tehcnology of internet, lan and wan networks. How to set them up, optimise them and design them.

We'll elect a mod soon, I'd like to see one of the Ireland Offline guys involved (I think Cloud is involved with that).

    DeVore.

the name doesn't seem to include ISP issues though. Networks/Broadband would be ideal although its a bit too big... still as long as people know where to post on issues its alright smile.gif

Well I'm in favour of getting the point home to people that the network in their office doesnt differ all that much from the internet. People often see them as separate things...

I'll have a think about the name and the mod. Amp you are a great mod though its rare for us to issue two boards to a single mod (simply to avoid over working our mods!). I'm also going to see if one of the Ireland Offline people will assist in moderating it...

usually we see how it goes and decide later. Its an admin thing to be honest.

DeV, seeing as ur reading this thread, will boards.ie be upgraded to ubb v6?

or, have you heard of vbulletin? its a php/mysql ubb clone. its meant to be significantly faster on big sites and can import from ubb.

imo, the moderator of this board should be someone with a good solid understanding of the internet and it's comms technologies.

Someone with their finger on the pulse of new connectivity tech and who will encourage lively debate and inform us all in general of cool things that are happening outside of the ESAT no-limits 'dispute'.

If the board is to be about Ireland Offline, we should just put Bard in and rename this board to that, then redirect his community board to this.

The name 'Nets / Comms' suggests something totally different to "We want broadband now!"

I think this board could be a good idea, so long as it serves to inform and invoke conversation about the broader issues as well, especially new tech...

Anyone remember the Cisco/Valve 'PowerPlay' project? smile.gif

Tell me five things flawed about the ideals put forward in that smile.gif

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,393 ✭✭✭Jaden

    Hmmm,

    Problems with powerplay.

    1. Generic software/protocol solutions to connection quality issues would be almost impossible given the number of differnt games developers who signed up. Companies use very differnt methods to transmit data to and from client machines, finding an acceptable compromise to improve all of them even marginally is not feasable.

    2. PowerPlay was designed to be ISP specific. Duh.

    3. Powerplay was initally aimed at Modem users, and would eventually be rolled out to higher bandwidth connection users. Improving modem connections, while for the moment is a worthy cause, is a bit like flogging a dead horse.

    4. Cisco, the biggest company company involved in powerplay, was expected to send tens of millions of dollars on R&D. Why would they do that, unless they could make money off it? The only way to make money off Powerplay, was to pass on the cost to the end user. Why pay extra to improve your modem connection, when you can upgrade to ISDN/Cable instead? Modemers are poor, that's why they have modems. smile.gif

    5. Powerplay will only really be effective if you have Cisco on one end, and Cisco on the other. It was designed by Cisco, for Ciso. As I recall, Quality of Service (QoS) is a Cisco buzz term, which came about due to Voice over IP being intolerant of data delay. Power play is Cisco's way of ensuring that to get a better game, you have to use cisco products. And if, like VOIP, you prioritize packets for power play, then someone else's packets are de-prioritized. Very fair.

In summary: You can't have LAN like gameplay unless:

    A. You're on a LAN.

    OR:

    B. You're on a LAN.

I know I do, and I know Dev was looking for someone from IrelandOffline to co-mod it. That's why I offered. To be perfectly honest I wouldn't have had a clue on the question answered above by Jaden but there's still a heck of a lot more I could contribute on.

No skin off my nose either way - the offer is there... name in hat, so to speak.

Well I wouldn't say I know enough about networking, internet politics etc for this particular board.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 521 ✭✭✭Ronin

If your going to have a board about net /comms then the topic of ireland offline shouldn't really enter into it, unless its something informative to the whole net/comms area in general.

Lets not have another place where all we hear about is the lack of boardband everywhere, there are enough places around with that already.

And before anyone blows up about lack of boardband I'd love more then anyone to have boardband at home. But there isn't that much that can be done, unless you have a large chunk of money to spend .

If you want it to be about the lack of boardband in ireland then create a board called "lack of boardband moaning board" and leave it at that.

    Excellent, Well Done Jaden.

Unless Sico, Bard and amp have enough interest in general net tech, (as opposed to "I wanna board!"), like this to make this board an interesting place, then it should probably go to someone with the enthusiasm of Jaden there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 215 ✭✭Skeptic1

I think that broadband issues should be discussed here. They don't really fit into the technology board and IrelandOffline have specific strategy issues to discuss on their board. Wide ranging discussions don't really belong there either.

I don't think you can talk about networks and communications without talking about the Internet. If the Internet is going to be discussed here, then you can't really leave out talking about the means of accessing it. Unfortunately, this includes political and money issues as well. All IMHO.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 752 ✭✭✭Loomer

IMHO this board should be purely for tech ques/discuss etc. Eircom rants should be in Humanities or perhaps a new forun i.e. Inhumanities biggrin.gif

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 215 ✭✭Skeptic1

They may object to them on the (in)humanities board as well. I just think things will spill over into this area.

I take it that the net/comms board will be the place people will discuss the relative merits of ISPs and when broadband arrives, people will be enquiring about that here as well.

I agree that pointless rants should be discouraged however.

Perhaps two boards: Networking and Internet would be more appropriate. I know Devore wants to emphasise that the underlying concepts are similar, but I don't think people think like that. The Internet has always been a mix of politics and technology.

Or maybe the board should simply be called "Internet". Home and office networking could stay on the technology board.

*amp puts down the +4 Staff of Sarcasm*

I was never really serious about being the mod of this board. Certainly no "I wanna board" motive here. Of course the "mods want more power" but most of us want to see boards with healthy discussions and stuff with the muppets kept in check.

At the end of the day I can only say what I want to see in this board and that's a board where help can be found and given and a mod with a sense of humour tempered with responsibilty and a good bit of networking knowledge. While I could do the job, I consider myself out of the running.

Therefore I say Jaden should be mod. With Sutty as a co-mod cos maybe he'd shut up then wink.gif
