Here is the sad history. Plenty of it .

    http://www.avforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1782853&postcount=904

It did not perform as advertised so Aldi have to take them back if you insist they do. Keep the packaging handy for the plasmas....in case

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 105 ✭✭HOB-it

um.. we're talking about the 42" plasma dude. not the 32" lcd.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 25,234 ✭✭✭✭Sponge Bob

ALDI are making the same sort of ridiculous claims for the plasma that they made for the 32" LCD in May. If it does not do absolutely everything they advertise when its taken straight out of the box then bring it back to them .

They used to do what they said on the can until the 32" LCD was shipped. Over on AVFORUMS someone is already wondering how they will do HDTV with a Plasma Panel of only 852x480 ....just for starters :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 105 ✭✭HOB-it

hmm good point. you need at least 720p for true HD TV. 480p wont cut it - maybe they're touting this as HD. From what ive heard as well its a vga connection and not DVI.

If it is a 852x480 panel, I presume that they just mean that it will accept HDTV signals and downsample them to fit the screen.

Seems decent enough to me. If the picture quality is good I can't see how you can go wrong. €1500 for a 42" plasma with wall bracket is a bargain in anybodys language.

Some folks get far too uppity about missing features and the like (especially considering the price)

For something not available in Ireland or Uk for a good while yet.

Nice tv for the price, little over 14 months ago these things cost €4000 without a tuner. I holding out for thet LCDs next version.

Sounds like a fine basic screen but as for the screen been High def that is rubbish as the resolution is far to low for high def.

    I think the key is

Full HDTV compatibility (480p, 720p, 1080i) via DVD input including HDCP decoding

Ive no idea what "via DVD input" means but its VGA display appears to goes up to 1280 x 1024.

I have a panasonic pw6. It has a res the same as this LG, if I connect a PC it can go up to very high resolutions but it is just an approximation, so text is blurred, it is fine for pics or games. I know cheaper plasmas do not have as good a processor as the pw6 and the image is more distorted/blurred.
I wanted mine as a tv and pc monitor. now I am getting a 32 LCD as I am not happy with the resolution on the PW6 for web browsing, screen is too big for it too. I certainly do not consider mine or the LG to be "HDTV ready"

the LG looks a great deal with the stand and tilting bracket speakers tuner etc, all that would have costed me an extra €600-800.

doesnt say what connections it has, like scart, component, vga, extra speakers etc.

I can only assume that they don't have a clue what they are selling. The 10,000:1 contrast ratio seems a bit much for a cheapo plasma. All these features listed but doesnt even say what connections it has.

Thanks for that link bambam I'll be following with interest.

Tbh for 1 and a 1/2 grand I don't really think you can go wrong. Wack the xbox, sky and dvd into it and you're laughing. As long as the screen is decent enough quality I'll def be in the queue for my new living room tv :)

still a good deal assuming it works better than the LCD they were selling in May.

if you really want HDTV then but this one and wait a year or two, sell it then go buy something better.

right now, it's about the best offer of a budget plasma there is.

that said, i'm only midly temped by the offer.

thinking of waiting another 12 months and going to a decent 42" LCD when the price will be a lot lower.

You have to buy sometime, in 12months you may be saying, i'll wait another 12 months for a high end 60" LCD to drop. If you buy it now, you may get €1000 for it next year second hand, thats under €10 a week you paid for it. TVs are getting like PC prices these days. My mate has a sony 32" widescreen that he is still paying off on credit, it was €1700! He is well pissed off when he sees these prices, but I always remind him that he would have still been watching his 21" for all that time if he hadnt bought it then

Just hope everyone heeds the warning about keeping these beasts upgright and not flat otherwise there could be a lot of unhappy people.

My local store will have just 6 in stock, but apparently you can order one if you are not lucky enough to get one of these.

I think the Plasma is a pretty good deal as it comes with a 3 year warranty and bracket. The specs also look good (not forgetting the fiasco with the 32" LCD :( )

I think people are getting a bit hung up on the HDTV thing. I agree they probably shouldn't have put the HD logo/symbol on the advert, but apart from $ky, we are years away from HDTV in this country.

Can an "expert" confirm or deny the "keep upright" instruction. I would imagine that the screens would have been on their side at some point on their way from the Far-east where they were born.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,391 ✭✭✭fatherdougalmag

I'm not an expert but a mate mentioned it at the weekend. He recently bought an expensive TV and got chatting with the delivery man. He said that it's a common enough problem when people decide to take their own TV home rather than get it delivered. It looks like a case of 'this way up' really meaning 'this way up'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,391 ✭✭✭fatherdougalmag

Well to whom it may concern Newland's Cross are all out of their stocked screens but they will take orders. It will take about 4 or 5 weeks to come through. Plenty (about 30) DivX players and home cinema kits left but they've probably got more out back.

In relation to trasporting/hanging the plasmas...

...Hire Shops... store, hang and transport them at various angles

....you can buy Angle brackets for Plasmas..

I have never heard anything like that before.. must be trying to cover their asses.

Hey ... remember the first Ad's sony released for plasmas? ... there was a couple trying to decide where it would go, had it mounted in varying positions .. including on the ceiling directly over the bed..

Noticed this morning there's plenty of these still available in Ballincollig down here in the real capital. It must be all this extra culture we're getting or something. People don't want to buy tvs any more

Plasmas have to be transported Vertically. Allot of plasmas come with spirit levels in the boxes that indicate if the've be horisontall at anytime, if so dont take it(note: Only certain manufacturers do this) The screens are very delicate, a slight impact can destroy them...

This is what hapend to someones plasma on AV forums after UPS had it stored horizontally...

A few people have mentioned selling on their TVs but where do you do that? Is it just selling it to friends?

I am really surprised people would sell them on and more that people buy them. Don't plasma screens have a limited lifespan?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,386 ✭✭✭✭rubadub

Don't plasma screens have a limited lifespan?
Some last longer than others, normal would be 10 years after which it starts to fade. I would be happy if any electronic equipment lasted 10 years these days. We have gone through about 6 videos in my house, yet there is still one working from the early 80's, one of the first JVC's out.

You should transport them vertically, just because of the dynamics of a car. Do you ever see glaziers trucks storing glass down flat? No it is always vertical. Glass is strong but brittle, a car/truck can flex, if say the front wheel hits a big stone, the whole carriage is shook, glass in a vertical postition can undergo far more shock than a huge pane lying flat since a change in "flatness" of the truck is acting on a much smaller space.

I purchased one of these TVs and so far I find it excellent, despite all the rumpus about the HD ready/compatability issue.

The picture quality on DVDs is excellent. TV is not quite so good, buts thats due more to the poor quality signal rather than the Plasma Screen. PC connectivity is OK also.

Overall I think you would have to pay nearly twice as much to get a Plasma with the same

    1. Specs - brightness 1,500/contrast 10,000
    2. Warranty - 3 years, 1 year repair/refund & 2 years repair
    3. Desktop stand
    4. Mounting bracket
    5. Appearance - excellent

While the experts may recommend the Panasonic or other more expensive brand, I think this screen will tick all the boxes for the average joe at an affordable price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,710 ✭✭✭Celticfire

I have to agree, bought one and I'm more than happy with it. I feel it is good value to the average person looking for a good deal, if on the other hand yo feel the need to have a top brand name appliance then nothing good that is said will convince you that you don't allways have to pay top dollar or over the odds to get something decent. Just a note on the t.v. it's not made in the far east but in Germany. Thank God the likes of Lidl & Aldi are bringing good value electronics to the masses

Actually I think it is probably "assembled" in Germany, as the screen is made in China, as far as I know.

I think the majority of all Plasma screens are made in the Far East.

Not to say you are wrong but on the box it states "made in Germany"
It's screen is an LG and the tuners are made by Samsung.

All in all I am more than happy with the quality of the picture and the sound from it's own speakers is fine also.
I would recomend that should Aldi do them again get one and I'm sure Lidl won't be too far behind.. :D

Yep, the screen/electronic insides are probably maufactured in Taiwan, almost everything to do with your computer was made there.

(Technically Taiwan is China, so if you have heard that it's 'correct':))

sorry for dragging up an old thread. but just wondering if anyone is having the same problem, my dad informed me that his is suffering from shutting off/surging the power in the gang adapter he is using. Says the tv shuts off after a couple of hours.
How do you get aldi to repair these things, specially if you have it mounted on the wall :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,008 ✭✭✭rabbitinlights

Try powering the plasma straight from the plug, or at least try another gang lead. Apart from that ring aldi. Its totally up to you to bring the plasma to them though. Also try unplugging everything else and just power the tv on for a few hours.

    Good Luck.
