Dilemma...

My MA has changed direction (also 3 instructors became 1 plus 2 new ones) - about a year ago - not for the best or not for the best of what i want to do.
I'm a year from my BB so kinda tempted to hang on to get this cos it would be a nice to have.
Also don't really want to desert my home of over 4 years - 3 1/2 of which was home to some kick ass fighting.

Anyway I miss the MMA / street aspect we had and had good.

Standup (kicking and punching) moved into clinch/throws/takedown and the ground.

Hung on this long cos i thought it was just a phase sensai was going through but alas no!! another guy mentioned it and was told that this is the direction for now on.
guess i know not want to do?

has anybody advice or been in this situation before?

Im my experience if the top dude is going in one direction and your hoping you can tag along but stay on a slightly divergent path, it will be noticed and it won't work. I ve seen it cause some nasty fallings out in JJJ, especially when the guy singing of a different hymn sheet has his own club.

If ye think the guy is mature and resonable you could try to discuss it.

epoman , i found your post entirely cryptic. i think you should kill the sensei and take over the club.

    EPO_MAN,

Sounds like the Concorde Fallacy to me (I love using that reference). You've put so much resources into it that it has to be of value, and you don't want to walk away because it will all be like that for nothing. But think of how much time you'll waste just to get your BB and then head off?

I had similiar thoughts with Kenpo. "But how come?" was a question that went through my mind a lot.

Move on if you're not happy man.

    Peace Out,
    Colm

We have all been there at some stage in our training. Some people leave and find another place (be it changing styles or just instructor) to train. Or stick it out untill getting the BB and move on after a few months.

You must have the freedom to be happy at what you are training at. If thats not the case then you are damaging a relationship and setting it up for a big fall.

    Good luck with your choice.

yes indeed. but at least i know it.
being a bit smart there. If I was a belt or two below I'd jump ship but I guess i just want closure and a BB would give me that. Something to take on.

It only another year or so to BB grading.

Which is more importanmt my training or my grade??
Training. But it's easier than it sounds.
Anyway I'll compromise I'll look for something new that interests me first before i jump.

I've been there and I left.

EPO MAN, if I were you I'd think long and hard about it, then leave. You've already said yourself that the only reason you'd stay was for the belt, you know the belt is hollow, so I think you answered your own question.

Granted you have some emotional attachment there too but that might be institutionalisation :D

i think the best thing for you to do at this point is shop around within your discipline. the transfer from one club to another is never completely smooth but you should find someone whose teaching complements your own training thus far...

if you have a comfortable relationship with the cifu which i assume you do after so long, then maybe have a quick chat with him/her in a social setting, not in the dojo. just voice your concerns and see what (s)he recommends. just don't burn your bridges. if this is a phase like you suspected at least you'll be allowed back should things change.

Well as I was in the same club as EPO_MAN so I understand its a hard decision. The club was so so so so great in the early days. Very open to ideas and full of people really into real training. It really was meaty Jujutsu.

Now its quite soft, focusing on the over complicated techniques that should only be showen as a "Nice to have" type of technique. Its also become riddled with politics.

I have only recently moved on but don't have any concerns about a belt. He just wants the black belt so he can lord it over me. It's the only reaon :D
