Suggestions on a good Flat Screen Monitor

    Hi all,

I have about 3 CRT monitors and I want to get rid of them to buy one or two flat screen monitors.

    Any suggestions on good ones.

Needed for work and gaming, so response time and colours have to be good, on the main one anyway. I won't get any with a response time of less than 16ms.

For the first monitor, I'm looking for 17" to 19"
The second one, 15" to 17"

    Cheers

    Keith

I am sort of swaying towards LG but an open to suggestions...

I'm thinking for the 17", maybe

    or

    I don't see a compareable 15" with DVI...

just looking at them prices made me cringe. they are 17 inch monitors.

get 19incher's for cheaper and also 8ms response time.

i've never used any flatscreen before but i know samsung are reputable.

If you can hang about till Dell have a special on again, you can't go far worng with a 2001/2005 FP ; I know you said 19" but the extra inch and the extra few hundred thousand pixels really do make a big difference. They source their panels from LG and Samsung, both of which have announced a sharp fall in the demand and hence pice for TFTs...bound to be a clearance sale at Dell soon...

The Samsung syncmaster at komplett is a good screen too, and it seems to be a good price.

I currently have the Samsung 193p. apparently the best 19" onthe market.
I love it :) great color reproduction and looks great. also it's come down a lot in price since I paid €650 for it :(

Samsung make damn nice TFTs. Used one in a build for a friend of mine and it's the most vibrant and bright TFT i've ever seen. Beats the living crap out of my dull and dingey iiyama

    Cheers for the advice guys.

The 19" Samsung 8ms looks like a nice buy for under 350 Euro in Komplett. Great price, although no DVI. Not a deal breaker though.

Not sure if I could justify the `50 Euro extra for the Samsung 193p, but that's a very nice model.

But I think I'll do some research on the Samsung 930BF 4ms for asmig over 415 Euro. Have to check out how the brightness would affect black shades.

Does anyone know Samsung's policy is on dead pixels? I know some manufacturers insist that two or three dead pixels spread out over the screen are NOT a problem and are not covered under warrenty.

Samsung as of the 1st of January 2005 will replace any new monitor with even 1 pixel gone.

Black shades are pretty good. the brightness of a monitor is not the most important feature. usually I don't have my monitor set to maximum brightness(about 50-60% brightness actually).

Wow, that's great news. That alone would make me choose Samsung. Any link to this policy anywhere?

Thats what made me finally bite the bullet and buy a TFT, before that the possibility of dead pixels put me off buying one. Also the samsungs always get unbelievable reviews.

The new story was on forbes and CNet too
here is a link to the Forbes article.

Ehh...The article only refers to monitors sold in South Korea, saying they have not decided if they will implement the policy worldwide.

Im sure its only a matter of time though, dead pixels seem to be the main turn off for people set on buying TFT monitors.

I'm on my second 19" Hansol H950 from Komplett and I'm very impressed with it. First one went wonky after a year, Komplett referred me to PSRA, display was replaced without quibble. Looking at buying a second one shortly, it'll be Hansol!

If u want something a bit cheaper but equally good go for a videoseven L17PS. PCformat list it as the no1 affordable lcd, i think they are great.

Great monitors at a great price, and i think 2 sitting next to each other would look smart :D .

I have a samsung 913n since May and it has devolped one dead/stuck pixel thankfully in the left hand corner, and Samsung will not exchange your panel unless it has more than NINE dead pixels on an 19"
Dirkvoodoo is correct only in Korea do they have the zero dead pixel policy.

    Have a read of this

Get a Class A TFT. Missus has an LG, it has no dead pixels.

    Interesting Article SgtShaft.

I wasn't aware that the zero pixel defect policy only applied to South Korea :(

Guess I was just lucky that my monitor had no dead pixels.

Nine dead pixels is a lot! If I had nine dead pixels that would drive me crazy.

    The policy has to improve.

Oh BTW the Samsung 193p is only rated as a class B

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,279 ✭✭✭DemonOfTheFall

Almost all TFTs are only rated class B afair.

If you get a dead pixel they can usually be fixed with pixel fixer videos left on loop for a few hours. If its jammed Red green or blue the chances are v good for fixing it. Black - no hope. white - not sure

If you don't care about dvi, i am very happy with my LG Flatron L1915s, which is 19" and has a 12ms refresh rate, and also is backlit, and is has zero dodgy pixels. I got it from Komplett for about 500 euro, although it cost me about as much again trying to get GLS, the courier company from the arse of satan, to actually give me the thing, so I would suggest shopping elsewhere for it, even if it costs significantly more.

Here is a nice article on BeHardware that deals with each builder's policy regarding Dead Pixels.
