Help needed - Buy new or upgrade?

    Hi all,

Just before I start may I state from the outset I am very computer illiterate :( , but need help in deciding to buy a brand new PC or upgrade what I have at the moment.

Its an emachine 1.2ghz, 128mb, 3D AGP Graphics Card, 20GB, four years old. It is so slow at this stage it's bugging me. Myself and my partner are looking to either try and upgrade it, buy second hand or buy a brand new one outright.

I like surfing and playing games, but obviously my choice of gaming is extremely limited with what I have now.

Basically, how hard would it be to upgrade the machine to a reasonable standard with add on's (or is it even possible?!), expensive? Could anyone help me out with this? Expenses covered of course! Or would I be able to pick up something second hand which could do the job.

Just if someone could point me in the right direction I would be delighted as I'm trawling thru sites and getting lost with the technical terms and figures!

    Cheers.

Read over some of the stickies and previous "new or upgrade" and "build me a pc" threads.
It would do you no end of good regarding the technical terms and knowledge that you'll build up in a very short space of time.

You'll always have questions so ask up here without fear of reprisal :)

Once you have a simple grounding in the basics you'll probably be more geared for some of the responses here :)
Anyway - I'd say just go the whole hog and buy a new pc, a machine that old can only be upgraded so much, and you'd be pushing it to get too much out of it at this stage.

Best of luck with the adventure :)

The FS Computers Hardware board regularly has 2nd hand PCs for sale. A lot of these will have been built by enthusiasts from Boards.ie as top end gaming PCs and are now a few minutes out of date so they're being sold to make way for a new machine. Many would still be capable of playing the newest games at full or nearly full detail so if you're not going to be a dedicated gamer and don't want the hassle of building your own they could be perfect for you.

Thanks very much for the help. At least now I have the excuse to buy a new one! "Boards told me to"! Cheers.

As stevenmu said, the pc hardward forum is good for second hand pcs

It would be easier and cheaper for you to buy either a decent 2nd hand gaming machine or a new one from the dell outlet store I reckons

Post the spec before you buy if your not quiet sure whether its what you need, someone will give you some advice!
