This one is doing my head in.

It has been out for a few years and it gets a bit of airplay now and then.

It has a distinctive dance/house synth bass line which cuts in before
each line of lyric. The lyric is sung by a female (quite soul style voice
not unlike the female lead vocal in Massive attack's unfinished sympathy).

The bass line thumps in .... dee dee dee dah-dah
and the lyric starts... "sometimes i feel" or "sometimes I wish...."
then a distinctive programmed synth backing which descends in pitch
,eg E-D-C-B cuts in behind the lyrics

Anyone know this. The bass line is so distinctive I wish I had a
midi sequencer and I'd be able to make a midi file with it and it
would be guessed straight away by anyone who knows dance
    music.

    any ideas?

The bass line continues to punch in between each line in the
    verse.
Sometimes the first note in the bass line is higher in pitch than
the first time it was played and it returns back to the
    mundane... dee dee dee dah-dah!

Thanks. However, that's not it. I just managed to preview the start of that
song using www.allmusic.com and a link to some CD resellers site with WMA
clips/previews (it wasn't on the iTunes music store).
It's not that track or probably even that band.

    Any other takers?

I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say "The Source ft. Candi Staton - You Got The Love", as it's something I once spent a long time trying to find, but to be honest it could be anything...?

If I'm right, This page has a link to a sample; if the backing track sounds wrong, it's likely you heard the "Now Voyager" (?) Mix.

Fantastic Capt Gadget. You are spot on. That indeed was the track.
I might find the other mix to see if it is the one which got more airplay
but the original version is probably exactly the one I was hunting for.

    :)
