Connecting DVD - need a little help!

I have just received a new mobo and i've begun to connect everything.

As i'm using an SATA HDD i have a spare 80 pin cable (as well as a 40). My question is: if i use the 80 will this offer any extra preformance for drive over the 40? and while i'm thinking of it; will connecting the DVD to the primary ide connector also give extra preformance?

    this may be of help

At a guess, the 80 cable will improve things slightly, but you probably want to keep the DVD separate from the HD if you plan to burn to or copy from the DVD drive on a regular basis.

If the DVD drive supports ATA-66/100/133, then you might gain a little depending on how fast the drive actually is; if it's ATA-33 only, then there's no difference whatsoever in terms of throughput.

BTW, the URL you posted has been mangled/abbreviated...

Since the HD is an SATA drive then putting the DVD on pormary or secondary controller should make no difference. As was said, the 80-pin cable only offers performance boost for ATA66/100/133 drives. I don't think it will make any difference but use the 80-pin since you have it.

I don't have any old 40-pin IDE cables left anymore since I replaced them all with rounded ATA100 cables. Haven't noticed any difference though but I'd guess you'd need to do a benchmarking test to see it.

    Thanks guys,
I've gone ahead and put the 80 pin cable in. I'd be lying if i said i noticed a difference, but the way i see it is that each day without my computer going up in flames (again) is a good day!!!

My DVD drive is only ATA-33 as are the vast majority of DVD drives...so using a 40pin cable will make no difference.

Im using an 80pin as my mobo's BIOS would flash a quick message stateing I was using a 40pin cable, then it would continue booting!

That's absolutely no harm, it's all fully backwards compatible. Just remember that the positions of "Master" and "Slave" are often (I think almost, if not absolutely always) different on ATA-66/100/133 cables than on their older brethren (ATA-33 or lower - Master is in the middle of the cable, ATA-66 or higher - Master is at the end of the cable...)

Is the BIOS detecting the drive?
