If you choose to delete all text messages from all folders, does it remove the messages from both the SIM and the phone memory?

Thanks lads, I handed in my work phone today for a replacement and I had some bank A/C numbers and other stuff that I had deleted, wanted to make sure they were really gone. The phone I got instead still had 150 text messages on it from the last owner, and they weren't all business related either!
