nope thats what i wanted him to do then i move my knight to the third square in from the top, third in from the left and its checkmate(i should have put numbers and letters on the side of the pic)

EDIT: which would look like this

So what did your opponent do?

Personally i think i'd have taken the knight that was posing the threat of checkmate, with my castle.

It ends the threat and puts the pressure right back on you.
There isn't even much risk in taking the knight because if you take the castle with either bishop or queen, you're still going to lose the queen.

    Ah, unlucky.
You could have moved c5-a7 for mate.

yep thats what he did allright , and somehow i was completley blind to the possibility that he could do that. i seem to be unable to spot some quite obvious moves, im still annoyed that i didnt spot the definate one move checkmate the move before :(

    Here's another one.
What should white do? (their turn)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,068 ✭✭✭stagolee

personally i would use the queen to take the rook at e6 but dont take my advice too seriously as i've only just graduated from calling the knight the horsie :)

No. It's a honey trap. If you don't take my queen it's mate next turn (I move it to b2).
The guy I was playing fell for it too :).

    I would have moved c2 to c3.
Puts the pressure back on your queen.
Your avenue of attack is closed off.
Your attempted honeypot still open to me if you make a rash move.

My queen could still be taken by your queen, but i doubt you'd take it after seeing a lot of your options closed off.
You'd be more likely to retreat and regroup.

If you did retreat, then i'd get stuck in with g5-h6 and put a bit of pressure back on you.

You were lucky enough to win from that position, but win you did.
    So well done.

That would have been a good move. I probably would have taken your queen if you had done that though.

Well i'd have been prepared for the lose of my queen and i'd have taken yours with either my knight or my bishop.

Taking with the knight would put pressure on your bishop, taking with bishop would put pressure on your rook.

Either one would have you on the back foot again.

Yeah I saw that. I would have been expecting the bishop to have taken it, and for me to have to move my rook. I wasn't criticising the move, just saying I probably would have made the exchange

    :D

I was just pointing out possible next moves.
