BangCD spam - anyone else?

This is a much busier board than Bargain Alerts so I thought I'd ask here as I'm curious how many people have been spammed by BangCD. And where might you have given the email address out?

As I said in this thread I'm trying to find out from them who sold them my email address. It's the first piece of spam I've ever received to my gmail account as I'm very careful where I use it. If I'm suspicious of a site I just use mailinator.com or mytrashmail.com instead. Therefore I'm pi$$ed off that someone sold my address. I always opt-out of any company providing my email address to any other companies.

The two most likely contenders at the moment are play.com and cdwow with CDwow being more probable as they're also based in the Orient.

I haven't gotten any from BangCD, but I'm in a similar state of anger over spam... an account I've had for years without spam has started getting emails from some cúnt selling 'discount software'.
There's an opt-out link at the bottom of the email, but each email comes from a different address using the same "from" name... so I doubt if opting out will do jack shít... and I definitly don't want to give them a "oh yes, I'm here and reading your emails, please! send more!"

they're both reputable companies tbh. I wouldn't expect either of them to ruin their name by selling email addreses.

I'm just repeating what I read on the other thread. I'm careful where and how my email address is used. But Play and CDWOW are the common factors for everyone who's reported receiving this email.

    Especially to their competitors.

Two possible options are that BangCD is owned by either Play or CDWOW (possibly a way around that ruling that wouldn't let them source cheap CDs in Asia ?) or else BangCD was started by former employees of one of the above who nicked their customer database. Having used both Play and CDWOW myself I have to say I never recieved anything from BangCD.

As a side note, I logged into my Yahoo (aka Spam) account just to check for this and noticed that a lot of the spam it's been getting lately is labelled SEXUALLY_EXPLICIT: or ADV: in the subject line making it easier to filter out. It's still not ideal but it's a nice step forward.

They wouldn't actually sell to their competitors - they'd sell their database to a third party who then sell it on to different companies. Either way - someone sold my email address - that's what Bang told me - and now they are refusing to tell me who they bought it off.

Maybe threaten to report them to their local police unless they tell you?

Would that make a difference though?
To a company that isn't based in this country?

Maybe one of your hoinest friends got some spyware that raided their address book and harvested your e mail on you, or you got an email of a friend for loads of people, and you were in the to: or cc: line. Always use Bcc: people. :)

did you try contacting play or cdwow ?

Play have had my email for ages and have been fine, as someone else said, try contacting them maybe.

Incidently, for future, I always use emails like play@mysitename.com and ocuk@mysitename.com etc... so that if I do get spam I can track it down. Then I just filter all those through to a generic email address.

You could also block BangCD in general, just block @BandCD.com or whatever, some ISPs will do that for you, I've got ebuyer barred for excessive spam, but then I really had problems with them, almost as many as with norton but thats an entire new book :D

They already admitted to buying a database of people that had an interest in cds and games. That narrows it down to 2 companies from my purchasing - cdwow and play.

Funny you should mention that ;)
"If I feel you are ignoring my request I will be forced to contact your ISP in the United States - Liquid Web - and inform them that unsolicited mail is coming from this domain which is registered in their name."
    and
"I must insist that the identity of the company that provided my email address for the purposes of unsolicited commercial email to a third party (yourselves) is disclosed to me or I will have no hesitation in taking this further; up and including legal action to force said disclosure if necessary."

In case you hadn't guessed I'm pi$$ed off at my name being on a commercial list :(

And rightly so. Your name was sold without your express permission.

Would that mean that they now have everyone's address??

    Hi

    Thank you for your email.

As far as we know, BangCD are a legitimate company and they are in no way
    affiliated with CD Wow.

We have not distributed any emails to them as they would be in direct
    competition with us.

We are not sure how they would have received any email addresses used solely
for CD Wow, but this may be down to other affiliates or companies
    distributing email addresses.

If you have ever used another company's discounted link to access the site,
they may have sold your details.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused and please do not hesitate to contact
me again with any further questions you may have.

    Regards

    Michael
