Card problem?

For the last 10 days or so I've had vision but no sound on my non-FTA channels. Last night I plugged out the box, removed the card, and left all to rest for 15 mins or so. Now I have neither sound nor vision on those channels. The FTA ones are perfect and I'm getting the Irish EPG, but when I try to watch, say, RTE 1, I get the message "Insert your Sky viewing card". No amount of "inserting" has any effect.
Can a card go faulty? Will Sky supply me with a new one?
    Thanks for any help.

Sounds like the box is either confused or gone faulty. Did you try to force a software update?

Thanks for replies. After ignoring it all for several days, I tried rebooting and reinserting the card once more today, and lo and behold it worked. All channels perfect now. Problem over, I hope!
    Thanks again.
