    people

just looking for ur opinion,im thinking of buying an acer laptop :
    Travelmate 2702LCi Pentium-4 3.0GHz, Microsoft Windows XP Professional, 40GB, 256MB DDR 333, CD-RW+DVD Combo, 15" TFT, Modem, LAN, 802.11g WLAN.12 month warranty

i can get this spec for 949 euro.

just wondering is this good value ? would i be better off getting a dell?
has anybody experience with acer laptops, are they reliable, and what sort of support do acer give to overseas customers.
does this laptop have a long battery life and would it be suitable for playing games? if not what sort of graphics card should i get ? is there anything else that i should get with theis laptop?

any replys would be appreciated as i am only a beginner!

    thanks

I recently got the Acer Travelmate 8100 and I have to say I'm well impressed. I don't know anything about the laptop you're looking at but based on my one, I'd recommend Acer.

    The spec seems decent.
You mention you want it for games. Check the graphics card on it. You'd want at least a good 64Mb (128Mb would be nice). Acer use ATI mobility graphics which are good. You may also want some more RAM. Can you get it with 512Mb.
Depending on what you need to store on the laptop, 40Gb isn't all that much. I have 60Gb harddrive I'm tight for space (but then I do have a lot of MP3s and applications installed).
Battery life should be okay, probably an hour and a half or so (see if you can find a review online for it that includes battery life).
If you want longer battery life, look at laptops with centrino processors (they'll be lower in terms of Ghz but will give much better battery). I have a 1.6Ghz centrino processor and it lasts about 5 hours on battery.

Hope some of this was a help.

I've the Acer Aspire 2023 WLMi for about 6 months now, no complaints. It's a v good laptop, good battery life, good gfx card - 9700 radeon 128 mb. Screen is good - only problem I have is the dvd multi drive is quite slow at transfering.
Overall I'd recommend it with one proviso - I did read something about Acer's support being a little poor...thankfully I haven't had any experience of this.

    ACER support is terrible.

I ordered one of Elara and it arrived DOA. Elara told me i had to deal with ACER.

I rang ACER and they told me i basicially had to ring an english courier and arrange for my laptop to be sent back to the UK and that i'd be waiting a few weeks for it to be repaired.

To hell with that. I drove down to elara and told them i wanted a full refund there and then according to Irish consumer laws.

I got the Acer Aspire 5021 about 2 weeks ago, and I'm impressed.

Excellent (but not to Sony standards) screen, nice build, good specs.

The only slight problem in my opinion is the keyboard... I have to hit the keys harder that my previous IBM laptop.

Exact same thing happened to me with my 5021wlmi, but I had bought it off laptopsdirect.co.uk and had to deal with acer, who got a place in Dublin to repair it, but it took 3 weeks.

The laptop is great though, my sister got a dell at the same time for the wame price but my screen is amazing and it all looks pretty sleek. Also don't buy Pentium...
