    Hi

Just wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of really entertaining bands for wedding receptions in the Louth/Monaghan area.

We are looking for a band that can get people up dancing, both young and old. We have a DJ to follow the band.

    Suggestions?

Don't do it. All wedding bands are pants. Let the fogies go to the bar for a chat and get a decent DJ for the young-uns. And by decent I mean "not a wedding DJ".

That's opinion, not fact (and probably not very constructive)

We want a DJ from 8-9pm (first dance etc) band from 9.00-11.00pm and DJ for last hour and a half til 12.30am.

Pablo Hayes is good from what I've heard, former FM104 DJ I think....?

    Anyone know?

My wedding was 3 weeks ago and I had Paddy Cole and band playing. I couldn't fault them at all. Everybody both young and old loved them.

Yep, its opinion. My opinion is that at the end of the day you're better off getting a decent DJ who will throw in a bit of Stax and Motown early on for the oldies is far better than having to listen to "I Just Wanna Dance The Night Away" by a bunch of sub-Joe Dolan goons in matching outfits playing accordian. Plus you'll be about €1000 better off for not hiring one of these Stena Sealink Cabaret Acts to demonstrate to your guests your lack of taste. :D

I'm available to DJ weddings, funerals, birthdays and barmitzvahs. :D

I've no intentions of getting accordian players or Joe Dolan, besides Joe's voice is not as good as it used to be!

Anyone know if the Navan Swing Band are any good or the Louis Smith Band?

    Navan Swing Band

I saw this lot at a friend's wedding. Terrible. Bunch of 70 year olds in matching waistcoats doing bad Louis Armstrong. Also avoid "The Evergreens" at all costs. I go to a lot of weddings :)

Ask yourselves this, if it wasn't a wedding, and you were throwing the biggest party of your life (which your wedding is) would you hire a wedding band?

Amazingly Wedding Bands are judged on their own (appalling) standards, rather than being compared with proper musicians. All they do is play cover versions, so why not have the proper versions played on a record?

If you want a band, and you're dead set on it, there are agencies in the UK that let you book old real bands for occasions. Last time I checked you could get Slade for about £5000. That's a wedding I'd enjoy. Or at least get a half decent tribute band like the Complete Stone Roses or something.

No, we are using the Nuremore in Carrickmacross.

For what it's worth, I think a good wedding band can add a lot to a function, and contribute a presence. Certainly, the fact that such a band plays covers does not invalidate their abilities as musicians. On the contrary, it confirms it. Playing covers well demands skilled musicians.

As far as the DJ alternative goes: why not cut out having one of the irritating little pricks and just play a set of your own MP3s through a PA?

I've always wondered why more people don't go that route...
