Xfree86 mouse weirdness

Running Slackware 8 with the latest version of Xf86. When I start xinit or startx, the mouse jumps around the screen like crazy, randomly highlighting things and clicking.

It's a standard PS/2 MS Intellimouse and I have it set to that in Xfree86config. This has happened to me before on another computer and with 2 separate distros (SuSE and RH).

/methinks it's some kind of bug in X?

Try setting it to just PS/2 or Auto, or try a few differenct similar mouse Protocols...

Em, by any chance are you running imwheel to make the wheel work ?
You need to use a slightly different protocaul with that, Auto should work,
    but check the docs.

I've tried out nearly all the mouse protocols, but not auto. I'll give that a go.

It was actually doing this with 2 other mice I tried aswell.

Perhaps turn off GPM ? search the linux.ie archives. this has come up a few times there as well.

hmm, seems to be working now. I just reinstalled X and a few other window managers.

For an MS Inteli mouse, after you've gone through 'xf86config', go into your XF86Config file with an editor of your choice, search for 'PS/2' and change it to 'IMPS/2'. Save the file and startx and it should be grand. I don't know why xf86config doesn't do this itself, maybe it is a bug.
