Linux on a Laptop

Right I'm a complete newbie to linux but I am tring to get back into C/C++ and I was wondering which is the easist Linux to install on a Laptop that has good dev tools and can be dual booted easy with windows. The lap top I have has a SIS Vid card and NIC and a Smart link modem. From what I can see the video card is suported in XFree86 4.0a and above for a laptop and the LAN card is supported with Linux kernel 2.2.15 or later version but I'm feiced for the modem (bloddy software modems). Any advice is welcome and please note I have installed linux before on my PC but nuked it in about 1 week due to not being able to get x running on it so a nice and easy distro is preferrable...

I was using Mandrake, though the automagic upgrader from 7.0 to 7.1 didn't work, 7.0 was sweet enough.

KDevelop is a decent IDE interface to the gcc compiler (or plug-in whatever compiler you like). The debugger is excellent.

You do know VB.net doesn't work on Linux, don't you?

Nice link Hobbes. I was thinking bout sticking BSD on my lappy and it shows my exact model there. Just have to get some RAM for it. Anyone know someplace cheap for lappy RAM?

Right ho I just got Mandrake 8 on the cover DVD of PC Format . Anyway thanks for the link Hobbes but as always when it comes to me and linux my Lappie aint listed there Its a Advent 6412 DVD (20GB HD, 128MB RAM,5XDVD,P3 1Ghz, Built in NIC/Modem/IR all for the messily sum of £1500 in Currys of all places). On the subject of Ram I saw 256 MB 144Pin ram for about Str£56 on scan and that wasn't even on the today only offers so I might be getting 2 of those soon enough. So I'll be able to sell 128 and if anyone wants to jump the order let me know.

Any way I'll give it go later on tonight and let yee know.
