Asus 6800TD Vs 9800 Pro

    Hey Ho Folks,

Just after some advice. I've found it hard to find any benchmark results for the 6800TD and as a result I've turned to your good selves for some advice. I currently have a Sapphire 9800 Pro 128MB (256bit) and have the option of a cheap upgrade if I want it to an Asus AGP 6800TD.

I know my system is rather craptacular, but I was wondering if I'd see any advantage in going from the 9800Pro to the 6800TD? Any advice or comments are most welcome.

    System
    Asus A7N8X-E Mobo
1GB Dual Channel DDR400 (nothing fancy)
    AthlonXP 2400
    Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (256Bit)
    Maxtor 120GB ATA 7200rpm

    6800TD? You mean 6800GT?

You will see a big increse in performance with a 6800. But it will be CPU limited in most games.

    Hi Ciaran,

No it's a 6800TD rather than a GT. Hey I'm more than well aware of the 6800GT, I wouldn't say no to one at all. The one I'm looking at is a 6800TD from Asus - V9999TD.

Yes, indeed the card is also known as the V9999TD. The memory clock is 300MHz lower than a normal 6800GT and it has 128MB of (non-DDR3) RAM. I've believe it offers 80% the performance of a full blown 6800GT. I would say go for it if the upgrade is say half the cost getting a GT.

You will see a bigger performance boost in getting a new amd 64 + motherboard than getting that card.

    I had a 2400XP + 512mb 333mhz ram + 9800NP.
40-50 frames in CS source video stress test.

Went to: AMD64 3500+, 1gig bog 400Mhz ram and still used my 9800NP.
100-110 frames in cs source stress test.....

A 2400XP will seriously bottle neck any gfx card you can get. CPU will make a bigger overall performance difference than a new gfx card.

I would compare the price of getting the card to getting a cheap amd64 + nf3 mobo.

Isnt the the v9999 td pretty much a 6800 wich can be/is overcloced to naerly the same speeds as a 6800 gt.you would be much better of getting a 6800 gt then the v9999 because it will preform much better at high resolutions thanks to its extra pipelines

a 9800pro isn't the bottle neck on a 2400xp system. There would be no point upgrading.

Hell, an AMD64 3000+ would bottleneck a 6800GT and thats far better than an XP24000+. Don't upgrade the graphics card, upgrade the CPU!

    A AMD64 3000+ wouldnt even bottleneck a 7800GTX!!!

Take a look at some graphics cards apps/tests...the bottleneck these days are the graphics cards and not relativately moden CPU's.

Unreal Tournament 2004 and Tiger Woods 2005 are both CPU bottlenecked on an AMD Fx-55. I'm sure a 3000+ would bottleneck a lot more games.

yes but the bottleneck wouldnt be great on doom youd probably be running at just under 70fps with an fx-55 and 6800gt whereas you would be running between 55 and 60 fps on a athlon 64 3000

But the bottleneck would definately be there on an XP2400+. That is way slow for such a good GFX card.

I have an A64 3000+ and a 6800 GT. The 3000+ is a crippling bottleneck on the graphics card.

(No I have not fscked up setting the computer up, no i have not forgotten to install motherboard drivers, no it isnt overheating, no cool n quiet isnt on, yes i do have enough ram, no the ram isnt slow, no the pc isnt using swap file)

I can underclock the 6800gt or overclock it and HL2 / CS:S barely budges as far as frame rate goes. However, if I overclock the processor performance instantly shoots up. Going from a 1.8 ghz to 2.4 ghz is a *huge* performance increase. Makes 1280x1024 with everything on highest at least 20 fps faster and keeps the game much more fluid. I find it totally unplayable with the same settings without overclocking.

Read a few reviews of any high end GFX card, the reviewer will always point out that it was cpu bottlenecked in all but the highest IQ benchmarks

There is no doubt that the XP2400 is a bottleneck, the obvious thing is to upgrade to Athlon64 which will be done soon enough. Can I just say that I plumped for the 6800TD LE and find it a huge improvement over the 9800 Pro. It is however just a stop gap and when I go down the 64Bit route it'll be with PCI-E.

(Now you can carry on arguing!!!)
