Last night I noticed a buzzing/rattling noise coming from my case. Is this a sign of a HD in its death throes? Or could it be something else?

I've downloaded Western Digitals diagnostic utility, so I'll give that a go tonight...

Any idea how long I've got before it goes kaputt ??

Could be the bearings in a fan as well. Hopefully that's it.

Oil your fans if the are making noises as it only GETS WORSE!!!!!

    Trust me....3in1 oil works great!

Strange development. Ran the diagnostic tools, and got the message "One or more errors were found in the index". The recommendation was to run chkdsk/scandisk. I ran both of them and they came up clean.

Are there any tools out there that'll do a better job of scanning?

iirc there's one or two listed in Khannie's "Essential Free Software" sticky.
