Word 2003 problems...

I'm having some problems with Word 2003... been trying to Google a solution for the last 90 minutes, and now ready to kill myself.

    This is the problem...

... whenever I try to insert a page number, Word 2003 puts {page} into my document instead. The same happens when I try to insert "page X of Y"... "page {page} of {numpages}" comes in instead.

    Anyone got any ideas?

I think that could be macros related. I remember seeing something like that before. Go to Tools > Macros > Security. Alter some of the settings in there. Its a long shot thou :-(

Go to Tools, Options and uncheck Field Codes.

After a few days using the recomended solution, let me change my last post to "Bullseye... ALMOST worked!!!".

pickarooney's suggestion that this was a "field code" problem was correct, and when I untick field codes the problem is resolved. However, when I go back into Word, the field codes are turned on again.

Is here any way to turn the field codes OFF in a way that they will default to staying off?

I can't remember if this option is dependant on your user profile or the document itself.
    Try this:
    - open Word
    - verify if the option is checked or not
    - if it's on by default, create a new, empty document
    - write some crap in it and save it
    - close Word
    - reopen Word by clicking on its icon (i.e. not by opening a file)
    - verify if the option is on or off
    - close Word and open it by double-clicking on a file name
    - verify it again

Field codes not document specific is a word toggle its either on or off. Word remembers it. Its a pain to go into that option to turn it on/off so I have written a macro and have it attached to a button that I can click on the toolbar to toggle it instead. But I use field codes a lot.

Maybe you've unknowingly installed a macro that doing this. If you want to set word back to its default settings. Search for a file called normal.dot and delete it (while word is closed) its a hidden file. Word recreates it with default settings when it can't find it. This will lose any customisations like custom toolbars you've saved to the normal.dot though.

Not to mention any macros saved in it.

Not to mention any macros saved in it.

Thats the point of deleting it. Virus or corupt macros cause a lot of problems.
