I'm just curious on how my dial-up pings compare to other people, i think the reason for high latency on dial up connections is the length from the exchange, a crap modem, and bad quality phone line, also post what speed you connect at!

Pinging www.boards.ie [82.195.136.36] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 82.195.136.36: bytes=32 time=147ms TTL=55
    Reply from 82.195.136.36: bytes=32 time=110ms TTL=55
    Reply from 82.195.136.36: bytes=32 time=110ms TTL=55
    Reply from 82.195.136.36: bytes=32 time=109ms TTL=55

    Ping statistics for 82.195.136.36:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 109ms, Maximum = 147ms, Average = 119ms

currently connected at 42.6k can be upto 49.2k!

I dont want broadband people going "Oh god thats so crap, my pings are like 20ms, why dont you get broadband!?"

I wish i could get broadband but eircom isnt upto the job.

probably because you get about 50kbytes/s?

apparently i get 100% loss when pinging www.boards.ie

    strange that

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,685 ✭✭✭zuma

    Just for comparison:

    My 2Mbit BT DSL gives
Pinging www.boards.ie [82.195.136.36] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 82.195.136.36: bytes=32 time=27ms TTL=56
    Reply from 82.195.136.36: bytes=32 time=26ms TTL=56
    Reply from 82.195.136.36: bytes=32 time=27ms TTL=56
    Reply from 82.195.136.36: bytes=32 time=28ms TTL=56

    Ping statistics for 82.195.136.36:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 26ms, Maximum = 28ms, Average = 27ms

When I had dialup, I would get between 40K and 50K depending on what type of modem I used...with winmodems being at the 40k range and dedicated hardware modems hitting 50k.

Those high pings are due to the roundabout way of using dialup.

Do a "tracert www.boards.ie" and post what you get.

Could be because this is the broadband forum :p I used to get ingame pings of about 170ms on my 56k back in the day. Only happened on the good UK servers though. My average ping was about 200ms. Good times! Most reliable pings i've ever gotten.

not bad for dial up, what speed are you connected at?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,065 ✭✭✭Snowbat

You really can't do much better than 100ms on dialup - it is a limitation of modem standards that are optimised for reliability and speed, not low latency. It indicates you have one of the better modems as I've seen some modems of poor design with 250ms on the first hop.

    Have you considered ISDN?

Yes but i dont think my exchange is enabled and its sh1t expensive last time i checked, if pings are as low as 30 i'd def get it for online gaming

I tend to connect at a steady 40k. Sometimes its better, maybe 45k.

I tried the pings on my laptop with a Conexant winmodem. Blah. 120/130 or so average.

    Whats a soft modem?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,606 ✭✭✭djmarkus

An internal modem or possibly USB that uses your computers CPU cycles instead of its own dedicated processor to do the calculations it needs, in short, aviod soft modems

They are sometimes called win modems and are as cheap as chips compared to dedicated modems.
Also they are very small and are installed in almost all computers these days due to their very low cost!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,969 ✭✭✭christophicus

Do they go into pci slots? cos i have a dell and the modem is on a pci card.

    Yeah.

Has the modem got a black cuboid caseing covering the electronics???
If so then its a win modem!!!

a better indication is that if your dial tone comes through your speakers then its a soft modem, if it comes throught a buzzer on the modem itself its a hardware one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,969 ✭✭✭christophicus

    Bad indicator!!!

I have a winmodem(Lucent) in front of me with a built in buzzer!!!
It only has two chips on the PCB...hardware modems would would probable have more.
It take up only half the width of the backplace and ends once all the connectors of the PCI slot are there for insertion.

    Very small, light and cheap!!!

I used to have an old Hayes Accura on a P2. It was 3 times the size of the thing Dell put in. :) Great modem pity about the lightening.

Its hard to get a hardware modem now that isnt external I would imagine. If you are stuck with a 56k, I would really recommend the USR external. Its a bit pricey new, but it is worth it. I bought it primarily for linux, but I couldnt now face a return to softmodem land.
